Cost effectiveness of different visual screening modalities cannot be calculated without long-term outcome data. This paper reports detailed outcomes from a gold-standard UK recommended orthoptist-delivered screening (ODS) at 4-5 years in school, compared to a neighboring school-nurse delivered screening (SNDS), both feeding into the same treatment pathway. The target condition was reduced visual acuity (VA) of worse than logMAR 0.

Coagulation factor IX (FIX) is a complex post-translationally modified human serum glycoprotein and high-value biopharmaceutical. The quality of recombinant FIX (rFIX), especially complete γ-carboxylation, is critical for rFIX clinical efficacy. Bioreactor operating conditions can impact rFIX production and post-translational modifications (PTMs).

Proteomic analysis of bioreactor supernatants can inform on cellular metabolic status, viability, and productivity, as well as product quality, which can in turn help optimize bioreactor operation. Incubating mammalian cells in bioreactors requires the addition of polymeric surfactants such as Pluronic F68, which reduce the sheer stress caused by agitation. However, these surfactants are incompatible with mass spectrometry proteomics and must be eliminated during sample preparation.

Pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy (PDE) is a cause of neonatal epileptic encephalopathy not previously known to cause ophthalmic disease. We describe the novel observation of a 5-year-old girl with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy and bilateral cataracts. PDE is the result of mutations in the ALDH7A1 gene encoding antiquitin, an enzyme protective against cellular dehydration and osmotic stress.

Article Synopsis
  • A new method was developed to produce toluene cis glycol using a specific strain of Rhodococcus (MA 7249) lacking certain enzymes.
  • The produced toluene cis glycol exhibited optical rotations that confirmed its absolute configuration as (1S,2R).
  • When grown in a lab with toluene vapors, MA 7249 achieved a concentration of 18 g/l of toluene cis glycol in about 110 hours and also produced similar dihydrodiols from other compounds.
