The ArcAB two-component system includes a histidine kinase sensor (ArcB) and a regulator (ArcA) that respond to changes in cell oxygen availability. The ArcA transcription factor activates genes related to metabolism, membrane permeability, and virulence, and its presence is required for pathogenicity in Typhimurium, which can be phosphorylated independently of its cognate sensor, ArcB. In this study, we aimed to characterize the transcriptional response to hypochlorous acid (HOCl) mediated by the presence of the ArcB sensor.

No organism is an island: organisms of varying taxonomic complexity, including genetic variants of a single species, can coexist in particular niches, cooperating for survival while simultaneously competing for environmental resources. In recent years, synthetic biology strategies have witnessed a surge of efforts focused on creating artificial microbial communities to tackle pressing questions about the complexity of natural systems and the interactions that underpin them. These engineered ecosystems depend on the number and nature of their members, allowing complex cell communication designs to recreate and create diverse interactions of interest.

Glycolysis, present in most organisms, is evolutionarily one of the oldest metabolic pathways. It has great relevance at a physiological level because it is responsible for generating ATP in the cell through the conversion of glucose into pyruvate and reducing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) (that may be fed into the electron chain in the mitochondria to produce additional ATP by oxidative phosphorylation), as well as for producing intermediates that can serve as substrates for other metabolic processes. Glycolysis takes place through 10 consecutive chemical reactions, each of which is catalysed by a specific enzyme.

  • Children with ASD showed higher mtDNA copy numbers and some mtDNA deletions in oral samples, but no significant changes were found in the expression of mitochondrial replisome genes compared to typically developing controls.
  • Increased oxidative stress and inflammation were noted in ASD subjects, and while overexpressing the TFAM gene in cell cultures led to some mitochondrial benefits, this didn't directly tie to changes in gene expression or mtDNA integrity, indicating a complex relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and ASD.

Purpose: To describe the treatments used in cases of infectious keratitis and determine the risk factors associated with treatment failure, including prolonged infection duration, treatment modifications, and the need for surgical intervention.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective case series includes culture-proven microbial keratitis cases treated in nine hospitals in the region of Galicia, Spain, between 2010 and 2020.

Results: A total of 654 patients were included.
