Background And Purpose: Chronic pain is a common problem and imaging is becoming increasingly utilized in the characterization of peripheral neuropathy, although this topic is not emphasized during medical training. We hypothesized that an electronic module and nerve atlas would be effective in improving comprehension among trainees.

Materials And Methods: In this IRB-approved study, a training module was created that included a side-by-side comparison of normal upper extremity nerves on magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound (US), with embedded questions and cases, followed by a brief hands-on US scanning session.

Functional perturbation of forebrain principal neurons reveals differential effects in novel and well-learned tasks.

Neural circuits in mammalian brains consist of large numbers of different cell types having different functional properties. To better understand the separate roles of individual neuron types in specific aspects of spatial learning and memory, we perturbed the function of principal neurons in vivo during maze performance or in hippocampal slices during recording of evoked excitatory synaptic potentials. Transgenic mice expressing the Drosophila allatostatin receptor (AlstR) in cortical and hippocampal pyramidal cells were tested on an elevated plus maze, in a Y-maze, and in the Morris water maze.

HIV Risks, Testing, and Treatment in the Former Soviet Union: Challenges and Future Directions in Research and Methodology.

Background: The dissolution of the USSR resulted in independence for constituent republics but left them battling an unstable economic environment and healthcare. Increases in injection drug use, prostitution, and migration were all widespread responses to this transition and have contributed to the emergence of an HIV epidemic in the countries of former Soviet Union. Researchers have begun to identify the risks of HIV infection as well as the barriers to HIV testing and treatment in the former Soviet Union.
