Pathogenic Aspergillus spp. and Candida spp. in coastal waters from southern Brazil: an one health approach.

Aspergillus and Candida are ubiquitous fungi included in the group of high priority in the World Health Organization list of fungal pathogens. They are found in various ecosystems and the environmental role in increasing the resistance to antifungals has been shown. Thus, we aimed to determine the occurrence of Aspergillus spp.

Pulmonary aspergillosis in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas): A case series.

We report a series of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in green turtles (Chelonia mydas) on the southern coast of Brazil. During 13-month period, seven animals were recovered on the coastal beach and sent to a rehabilitation center, dying after a period of captivity up to 27 days. Granulomatous nodules in the lung, with the presence of hyaline and septate hyphae, were found in all.

Aspergillus fumigatus sensu stricto genetic diversity from cystic fibrosis patients.

We aimed to access the genetic diversity of Apergillus fumigatus strains obtained from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients from southern Brazil. A. fumigatus sensu stricto isolates from respiratory clinical specimens were genotyped by microsatellite markers and azole resistance was evaluated by azole-agar screening.

Experimental study of specific and nonspecific blood culture bottles for the diagnosis of candidemia.

Background: Early diagnosis of candidemia is critical for the correct management and treatment of patients.

Aims: To test the efficacy of different blood culture bottles in the growth of Candida strains.

Methods: We compared the performance of BD BACTEC™ Plus Aerobic/F (Aero) culture bottles with the specific BD BACTEC™ Mycosis IC/F Lytic (Myco) culture bottles using the BD BACTEC™ FX 40 automated blood culture system to determine the mean time-to-detection (TTD) in Candida species.
