Article Synopsis
  • - The PhoPR system acts as a crucial regulator in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with a notable difference in the PhoR protein between M. tuberculosis and M. bovis due to a specific genetic substitution.
  • - Previous studies on M. bovis PhoPR have yielded mixed results regarding its functionality, prompting the authors to investigate this further by creating a mutant strain.
  • - Their experiments revealed that the M. bovis ΔphoPR mutant displayed reduced growth and significant changes in gene expression, particularly in lipid metabolism, emphasizing the role of the PhoPR system in regulating gene expression within the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex.

We describe application of whole genome sequencing (WGS) to a collection of 197 Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis (MAP) isolates gathered from 122 cattle herds across 27 counties of the island of Ireland. We compare WGS to MAP diversity quantified using mycobacterial interspersed random unit - variable number tandem repeats (MIRU-VNTR). While MIRU-VNTR showed only two major types, WGS could split the 197 isolates into eight major groups.

Background Hypocalcemia is common in patients admitted to the surgical intensive care unit and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Current dosing strategies do not always achieve ionized calcium (iCa) normalization, especially in patients with severe hypocalcemia. Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the association between intravenous (IV) calcium dose and change in ionized calcium.
