Emergency front of neck access in the management of acute airway obstruction secondary to postoperative neck haematoma.

Airway compromise is the most significant complication of a postoperative neck haematoma. Here, we report the management of a case of complete airway obstruction secondary to an acute neck haematoma arising after radical neck dissection, partial glossectomy and a free flap reconstruction. The patient deteriorated precipitously and required immediate emergency surgical front of neck access to secure the airway.

Clinician perception of long-term survival at the point of critical care discharge: a prospective cohort study.

Critical care survivors suffer persistent morbidity and increased risk of mortality as compared with the general population. Nevertheless, there are no standardised tools to identify at-risk patients. Our aim was to establish whether the Sabadell score, a simple tool applied by the treating clinician upon critical care discharge, was independently associated with 5-year mortality through a prospective observational cohort study of adults admitted to a general critical care unit.

Gastric lipoma: a rare cause of iron-deficiency anaemia.

A 60-year-old man presented with asymptomatic iron deficiency anaemia. Gastroscopy revealed a large submucosal mass involving the antrum and duodenal bulb with a deep ulcer in the gastric component. Computed tomography scan showed the lesion to be a rare gastric lipoma.
