Preferred β-lactone synthesis can explain high rate of false-negative results in the detection of OXA-48-like carbapenemases.

The resistance to carbapenems is usually mediated by enzymes hydrolyzing β-lactam ring. Recently, an alternative way of the modification of the antibiotic, a β-lactone formation by OXA-48-like enzymes, in some carbapenems was identified. We focused our study on a deep analysis of OXA-48-like-producing Enterobacterales, especially strains showing poor hydrolytic activity.

Hemorheological and microvascular disturbances in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background: In the blood vessels the impaired hemorheological parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) could lead to elevated flow resistance, increased forces at the endothelial wall and to microvascular disturbances.

Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate the hemorheological variables and the changes of the skin blood flow responses to cold stress in T2DM patients.

Methods: The basic hemorheological parameters: hematocrit (Ht), fibrinogen (Fib), whole blood viscosity (WBV) and plasma viscosity (PV) were examined in 20 patients with T2DM and a control group of 10 healthy age and sex matched controls.

Carbapenemase-Producing Gram-Negative Bacteria from American Crows in the United States.

Wild corvids were examined for the presence of carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacteria in the United States. A total of 13 isolates were detected among 590 fecal samples of American crow; 11 isolates harboring on the chromosome as a class 2 integron gene cassette within the Tn transposon, 1 ST258 isolate carrying on a pKpQIL-like plasmid as a part of Tn, and 1 isolate with located within EcloIMEX-2.

Insufficient repeatability and reproducibility of MALDI-TOF MS-based identification of MRSA.

Rapid identification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is essential for proper initial antibiotic therapy and timely set up of hygienic measures. Recently, detection of MRSA using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer mediated by the peptide-phenol-soluble modulin (PSM-mec)-linked to the class A mec gene complex present in SCCmec cassettes types II, III, and VIII of MRSA strains, has been commercially available. We present here a multicentre study on MALDI-TOF MS detection of MRSA evincing a poor repeatability and reproducibility of the assay.

Characterization of NDM-Encoding Plasmids From Recovered From Czech Hospitals.

The aim of the present study was to characterize sporadic cases and an outbreak of NDM-like-producing recovered from hospital settings, in Czechia. During 2016, 18 isolates including 10 complex (9 and 1 ), 4 , 1 , 1 , 1 , and 1 that produced NDM-like carbapenemases were isolated from 15 patients. Three of the patients were colonized or infected by two different NDM-like producers.
