Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has gained prominence worldwide as a powerful tool in public health. This study aimed to monitor the circulation of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) from wastewater samples collected during a six-year period and compare these results with clinical surveillance in the central region of Argentina. From 2017 to 2022, 1008 raw wastewater samples were analyzed, including four wastewater treatment plants from four cities (n=319), and 7 local neighborhood collector sewers in Córdoba city (n=689).

Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoAHV-1) infection affects the production and reproductive performance of dairy and beef livestock, resulting in considerable economic losses. In addition to biosecurity measures, vaccination programs are effective strategies for controlling and preventing BoAHV-1 infection and transmission. We evaluated the serological immune response against BoAHV-1 induced by eight different formulations of commercial vaccines: three modified live vaccines and five killed vaccines containing BoAHV type 1 or types 1 and 5.

Cancer initiation and progression are typically associated with the accumulation of driver mutations and genomic instability. However, recent studies demonstrated that cancer can also be driven purely by epigenetic alterations, without driver mutations. Specifically, a 24-h transient downregulation of polyhomeotic (ph-KD), a core component of the Polycomb complex PRC1, is sufficient to induce epigenetically initiated cancers (EICs) in Drosophila, which are proficient in DNA repair and characterized by a stable genome.

Although cancer initiation and progression are generally associated with the accumulation of somatic mutations, substantial epigenomic alterations underlie many aspects of tumorigenesis and cancer susceptibility, suggesting that genetic mechanisms might not be the only drivers of malignant transformation. However, whether purely non-genetic mechanisms are sufficient to initiate tumorigenesis irrespective of mutations has been unknown. Here, we show that a transient perturbation of transcriptional silencing mediated by Polycomb group proteins is sufficient to induce an irreversible switch to a cancer cell fate in Drosophila.
