Introduction: Respiratory infections, collectively, are one of the World's most common and serious illness groups. As recent observations have shown, the most severe courses of acute respiratory infection, often leading to death, are due to uncontrolled cytokine production (hypercytokinemia).
Methods: The study involved 364 patients with respiratory illness being treated in clinics in St.
Communicable respiratory viruses as a causative factor of infectious complication in hemoblastosis and myelodepression were investigated in 51 patients (aplastic anemia--3, multiple myeloma--10, different patterns of acute leukemia--16, chronic leukemia--8 and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma--14). Our clinical evidence obtained with the aid of polymerase chain reaction featured genomes of adenoviruses, influenza A and B viruses, respiratory-scintillating virus and coronaviruses. On the whole, respiratory viral infections were detected in 27 (52.

Severe infectious complications in the patients were associated with prolonged and deep neutropenia during inductive or antirelapsing chemotherapy. All the patients in the trial were from the group of high risk of infectious complications with the blood neutrophil count under 100 cells/microliter.
