Opioids in geriatric units in 14 Belgian hospitals: prevalence, dosage and associated factors.

Adverse effects of opioids are common among older individuals, and undertreatment as well as overuse can be an issue. Epidemiological data on opioid use in older individuals are available, but scarce in hospitalized patients. The aim of this study is to examine the one-day prevalence of opioid use among older inpatients and identify the factors associated with both opioid use and dosage.

Heart 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase activation by insulin requires PKB (protein kinase B), but not SGK3 (serum- and glucocorticoid-induced protein kinase 3).

On the basis of transfection experiments using a dominant-negative approach, our previous studies suggested that PKB (protein kinase B) was not involved in heart PFK-2 (6-phosphofructo2-kinase) activation by insulin. Therefore we first tested whether SGK3 (serum- and glucocorticoid-induced protein kinase 3) might be involved in this effect. Treatment of recombinant heart PFK-2 with [γ-32P]ATP and SGK3 in vitro led to PFK-2 activation and phosphorylation at Ser466 and Ser483.

Evaluation of the role of protein kinase Czeta in insulin-induced heart 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase activation.

A wortmannin-sensitive and insulin-stimulated protein kinase (WISK) that phosphorylates and activates heart 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase (PFK-2) was purified from serum-fed HeLa cells and found to contain protein kinase Czeta (PKCzeta). Both WISK and recombinant PKCzeta were inhibited by a pseudo-substrate peptide inhibitor of PKCzeta. WISK and PKCzeta phosphorylated and activated recombinant heart PFK-2 by increasing its Vmax.
