Symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing in children with nocturnal enuresis.

Objectives: There is an association between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and nocturia in adults, raising the question as to whether SDB could play a role in the aetiology of nocturnal enuresis (NE) in children. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between these two conditions.

Methods: The study group comprised 40 patients, aged 5-15 years, with enuresis and the control group 40 children undergoing routine day-case surgery.

Increased cerebral blood flow velocity in children with mild sleep-disordered breathing: a possible association with abnormal neuropsychological function.

Objective: Sleep-disordered breathing describes a spectrum of upper airway obstruction in sleep from simple primary snoring, estimated to affect 10% of preschool children, to the syndrome of obstructive sleep apnea. Emerging evidence has challenged previous assumptions that primary snoring is benign. A recent report identified reduced attention and higher levels of social problems and anxiety/depressive symptoms in snoring children compared with controls.

Nocturnal enuresis: a placebo controlled trial of two antidepressant drugs.

A multicentre, randomised, double blind treatment trial was set up comparing imipramine (a tricyclic antidepressant with anticholinergic action), mianserin (a quadricyclic antidepressant without anticholinergic activity), and placebo, (a) possibly to identify an effective alternative drug and (b) to elucidate the action of imipramine in enuretic children. Eighty children (65 boys, 15 girls) aged 5-13 years, wet three or more nights a week, were studied. Exclusions were a urinary tract infection or abnormality, other organic illness, or severe emotional disorders.
