In early rheumatoid arthritis, anticitrullinated peptide antibodies associate with low number of affected joints and rheumatoid factor associates with systemic inflammation.

Objectives: To investigate how individual rheumatoid arthritis (RA) autoantibodies associate with individual signs and symptoms at the time of RA diagnosis.

Methods: IgA, IgG, IgM rheumatoid factor (RF), antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptide version 2 (anti-CCP2) and 16 individual antibodies against citrullinated protein (ACPA) reactivities were analysed centrally in baseline sera from 1600 patients with RA classified according to the 1987 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. These results were related to C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), number of swollen and tender joints (SJC and TJC), 28-joint disease activity scores (DAS28 and DAS28CRP), global disease activity evaluated by the patients and Health Assessment Questionnaire, all obtained at baseline.

Human Whole Blood Interactions with Craniomaxillofacial Reconstruction Materials: Exploring In Vitro the Role of Blood Cascades and Leukocytes in Early Healing Events.

Complement activation in the diseases paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) results in cytolysis and fatal thrombotic events, which are largely refractory to anticoagulation and/or antiplatelet therapy. Anticomplement therapy, however, efficiently prevents thrombotic events in PNH and aHUS, but the underlying mechanisms remain unresolved. We show that complement-mediated hemolysis in whole blood induces platelet activation similarly to activation by adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP).

Determination of emergency nurse practitioner and plastic surgery trainee disposition decision agreement for plastic surgery emergency department presentations: A prospective study.

Objective: To examine if there was a high degree of agreement for disposition decisions of emergency nurse practitioners (ENP) compared to plastic surgery trainees (PST) for plastic surgery presentations.

Methods: A prospective study of disposition decision agreement from February 2020 to January 2021 for patients who required plastic surgery consultation and managed exclusively by an ENP. Absolute percentages were used to determine the exact disposition decision accuracy of ENP and the PST, while Cohen's kappa compared disposition decision agreement.

Impact of spontaneous liposome modification with phospholipid polymer-lipid conjugates on protein interactions.

Liposome surface coating has been studied to avoid the immunological responses caused by the complement system, and alternative materials to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) have been explored recently since the production of anti-PEG IgM antibodies has been found in humans. We previously reported a liposome coating with poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (poly(MPC))-conjugated lipids (PMPC-lipids) and demonstrated its protective effect on blood protein interactions. Here, we attempted to modify the liposome surface by exogenously adding PMPC-lipids, which were spontaneously incorporated into the outer membrane via hydrophobic interactions.
