Aims: The occurrence of left ventricular (LV) anodal activation during pacing with modern multipolar cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) systems has never been reported. The aim of our study was to demonstrate, by means of electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis, the occurrence of simultaneous cathodal-anodal LV capture with quadripolar LV leads.

Methods And Results: We studied 10 first-time recipients of a CRT device equipped with a quadripolar LV lead.

Maternal care decision rules should evolve responsiveness to factors impinging on the fitness pay-offs of care. Because the caretaking environments common in industrialized and small-scale societies vary in predictable ways, we hypothesize that heuristics guiding maternal behaviour will also differ between these two types of populations. We used a factorial vignette experiment to elicit third-party judgements about likely caretaking decisions of a hypothetical mother and her child when various fitness-relevant factors (maternal age and access to resources, and offspring age, sex and quality) were varied systematically in seven populations-three industrialized and four small-scale.

From January '92 up to January '94 thoracoscopy was performed in 51 patients with recurrent pleural effusion: 49 of these patients underwent talc pleurodesis. 10 pleural mesotheliomas, 29 diffuse metastasic pleural involvement and 12 benign effusions were diagnosed. Intrapleural talc therapy allowed a definitive pleurodesis in 43 patients with a success rate of 87%.
