Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an often overlooked cause of heart failure (HF), highlighting the importance of early detection and timely therapy for better patient outcomes.
  • A global survey with 1,460 physicians revealed that while many have experience diagnosing CA in patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), systematic screening is not widely practiced, with only 10% conducting routine checks.
  • There is significant variability in screening and management strategies for CA, indicating a need for better education and access to disease-modifying therapies within the HF community.

Discovery of meningeal lymphatic vessels (LVs) in the dura mater, also known as dural LVs (dLVs) that depend on vascular endothelial growth factor C expression, has raised interest in their possible involvement in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we find that in the APdE9 and 5xFAD mouse models of AD, dural amyloid-β (Aβ) is confined to blood vessels and dLV morphology or function is not altered. The induction of sustained dLV atrophy or hyperplasia in the AD mice by blocking or overexpressing vascular endothelial growth factor C, impaired or improved, respectively, macromolecular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage to cervical lymph nodes.

Background: Injections of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) have been proposed as an additional treatment modality for patients suffering chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-related myofascial pain (MFP). BoNT-A impairs muscle function, along with its analgesic effect, and a minimal effective dose should be used. The objective of this randomized placebo-controlled crossover study was to evaluate the clinical benefit of a moderate dose (50 U) of BoNT-A.

To enhance the ecological properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, the fabrication of PVC-based composites using biofillers with acceptable performance characteristics could be considered. In this work, plant-filled PVC-based composite materials were fabricated and their optical, structural, thermal, and mechanical properties, depending on the nature of the filler, were studied. Spruce flour, birch flour, and rice husk were used as fillers.

Brain functionality relies on finely tuned regulation of gene expression by networks of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) such as the one composed by the circular RNA ciRS-7 (also known as CDR1as), the microRNA miR-7, and the long ncRNA Cyrano. We describe ischemia-induced alterations in the ncRNA network both in vitro and in vivo and in transgenic mice lacking ciRS-7 or miR-7. Our data show that cortical neurons downregulate ciRS-7 and Cyrano and upregulate miR-7 expression during ischemia.
