Unlabelled: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, also in Chile, where the main risk factor is smoking. Early detection using low-dose computed tomography has been shown to reduce mortality from this cause, but there are still no formal screening recommendations in Chile.

Aim: This initiative aimed to develop recommendations for lung cancer screening in Chile through an expert consensus process.

Background: By June 30, 2022, 92·6% of the Chilean population older than 18 years had received a full primary SARS-CoV-2 vaccine series, mostly with CoronaVac (Sinovac Biotech), and 78·4% had received a booster dose, mostly heterologous with BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) and ChAdOx1 (AstraZeneca). We previously reported national seroprevalence data from lateral flow testing of IgG SARS-CoV-2 antibodies up to 16 weeks after primary vaccination. Our aim here was to study IgG seropositivity dynamics up to 30 weeks after primary vaccination and, in CoronaVac recipients, up to 26 weeks after booster vaccination, and to establish the correlation between lateral flow tests and neutralising antibody titres.

1-Deoxysphingolipids (deoxySLs) are atypical sphingolipids of clinical relevance as they are elevated in plasma of patients suffering from hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN1) or type 2 diabetes. Their neurotoxicity is described best but they inflict damage to various cell types by an uncertain pathomechanism. Using mouse embryonic fibroblasts and an alkyne analog of 1-deoxysphinganine (doxSA), the metabolic precursor of all deoxySLs, we here study the impact of deoxySLs on macroautophagy/autophagy, the regulated degradation of dysfunctional or expendable cellular components.

Elastic properties of biological membranes are involved in a large number of membrane functionalities and activities. Conventionally characterized in terms of Young's modulus, bending stiffness and stretching modulus, membrane mechanics can be assessed at high lateral resolution by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). Here we show that the mechanical response of biomimetic model systems such as supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) is highly affected by the size of the AFM tip employed as a membrane indenter.
