Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) allows the optimization of diagnostic processes for hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients. Our objective was to evaluate the clinical, economic, and management benefits of an AI-based clinical decision support system (Intelligen-C strategy).
Methods: The Intelligen-C strategy consisted of (1) a retrospective phase (Dec 2013-Sep 2021), in which medical records were reviewed to search for anti-HCV-positive and/or HCV-RNA+ patients lost in the system, and (2) a prospective phase (Feb 2022-Jan 2023), in which automated screening (40-70 years) and routine testing for risk factors were performed in patients who were admitted to the emergency department or were hospitalized.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a mobile app designed to improve chronic disease self-management in patients 40 years and older with low health literacy and who had at least one chronic health condition, and to assess the impact of delivering information at different levels of reading difficulty. A randomized controlled trial was completed at two sites. Individuals aged 40 years and older screened for low health literacy who had at least one chronic health condition were randomly assigned to a tailored information multimedia app with text at one of three grade levels.

Complete resection with clear margins is the treatment of choice to avert metastasis, improve prognosis, and prevent complex complications due to the polyp growth and location. We present the case of a 70-year-old male who presented in 2023 with dysphagia due to an esophageal polyp; surgery was recommended.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis study aimed to assess differences in the enteral microbiome of relatively recent-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients (< 6-15 months since symptom onset) compared to healthy individuals, focusing on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as potential mediators of host metabolism. We included 28 volunteers (16 ALS, 12 controls) with informed consent. No significant effect of ALS on alpha diversity (measuring the variety and abundance of species within a single sample, and indicating the health and complexity of the microbiome) was observed, but ALS patients had higher abundances of Fusobacteria and Acidobacteria.
