: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a common swallowing disorder, characterized by difficulties in moving food and liquids from the mouth to the esophagus; it is particularly prevalent among older adults with neurological conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term complex treatment protocol combining dietary modifications, swallowing exercises, and transcutaneous neuromuscular electrostimulation in reducing the oropharyngeal dysphagia severity and aspiration risk among geriatric patients. : A total of 64 participants aged 60 and older, with oropharyngeal dysphagia, at LSMU Kaunas Hospital between May 2021 and April 2023, were included in the study after excluding those with significant comorbidities.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) often occurs after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and can negatively impact patient outcomes; TMAO, a gut microbiota metabolite, may help diagnose CMD in these patients.
  • In a study involving 210 STEMI patients, TMAO levels were measured at various points, with a key finding being that TMAO at 3 months was a more reliable indicator for diagnosing CMD compared to baseline levels.
  • The research concluded that high TMAO levels (≥3.91) were linked to a greater risk of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), highlighting TMAO's potential as a biomarker that could enhance

A relevant role of osteopontin (OPN) and gremlin 1 (Grem1) in regulating cardiac tissue remodeling and formation of heart failure (HF) are documented, with the changes of OPN and Grem1 levels in blood plasma due to acute ischemia, ischemic heart disease-induced advanced HF or dilatative cardiomyopathy being the primary focus in most of these studies. However, knowledge on the early OPN and Grem1 proteins expression changes within cardiomyocytes during remodeling due to chronic ischemia remains insufficient. The aim of this study was to determine the OPN and Grem1 proteins expression changes in human cardiomyocytes at different stages of ischemic HF.

: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is defined as a swallowing disorder in which it becomes difficult to form a bolus and move food from the mouth to the proximal part of the esophagus. Several factors can cause this disorder in geriatric patients. With oropharyngeal dysphagia, the patient's social isolation and the risk of depression increase, while the quality of life deteriorates.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study with 92 patients experiencing acute coronary syndromes, about 29% were identified as poor metabolizers of the CYP2C19 gene, which resulted in a significantly lower response to atorvastatin treatment compared to normal metabolizers.
  • * The findings suggest that factors like the CYP2C19 metabolizing phenotype, patient age, and smoking status can increase the risk of inadequate treatment outcomes, highlighting the importance of tailoring atorvastatin therapy based on genetic profiles.
