Evaluation of Serum Cytokeratines, Thymidine Kinase, and Growth Factors as Cancer Biomarkers in Colorectal Cancer.

Background/aim: Classical serum cancer biomarkers, such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), remain important tools in colorectal cancer (CRC) management for disease follow up. However, their sensitivity and specificity are low for diagnostic and prognostic evaluation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of biomarkers reflecting biological activity of tumors - tissue polypeptide specific antigen (TPS), cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA 21-1), thymidine kinase (TK), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGF-BP3) - together with the CEA and CA 19-9 in CRC diagnosis and prognosis.

Small intestine adenocarcinoma associated with Crohn´s disease.

This case report presents a patient diagnosed with small intestine adenocarcinoma associated with Crohn´s disease. Intestinal cancer is a feared and rare complication of idiopathic bowel diseases. The most important factors for dysplasia include extensive involvement of the intestine and a long-term inflammatory process.

Circulating matrix metaloproteinases as biomarkers in colorectalcancer.

The aim of this research is to offer comprehensive point of view related to perspective tumor markers called matrix metaloproteinases and their natural tissue inhibitors. Those markers are potentially useable mainly in postoperative follow-up in patients with colorectal cancer.

Soluble RAGEs and cardiovascular risk factors in adult offspring of patients with premature coronary heart disease.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a heterogeneous group of highly oxidant compounds which can potentiate microvascular and macrovascular complications through the formation of irreversible cross-links between molecules in the basal membrane and also by engaging the receptor for AGEs (RAGE). Soluble receptor for AGEs (sRAGE) is suggested to have a protective role neutralizing the toxic action of AGEs. We aimed to investigate differences in plasma levels of sRAGE alongside with classic cardiovascular risk factors between offspring of patients with early onset of coronary heart disease (CHD) and healthy controls.
