Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how well left ventricular strain (LVGLS) detects left ventricular dysfunction in acute respiratory failure (ARF) patients on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), compared to the traditional measure, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
  • Three patient groups were analyzed based on their echocardiography timing related to IMV: during, before, and after IMV, with results showing that LVGLS was significantly higher in patients not on IMV compared to those who were.
  • The findings suggest that LVGLS may be a better indicator of early left ventricular dysfunction in ARF patients requiring IMV, as LVEF did not show significant differences among the groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) in coronary atherosclerosis using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
  • It compares two groups based on non-HDL-C levels: those with normal levels (≤130 mg/dl) and those with high levels (>130 mg/dl), finding significant differences in plaque characteristics and burden between the groups.
  • The results indicate that higher non-HDL-C levels correlate with increased plaque burden and larger necrotic core volume, suggesting its importance as a predictor for plaque vulnerability in coronary arteries.

Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is associated with poor prognosis in acute respiratory failure (ARF). Our study evaluates the efficacy of RV strain in detecting RV dysfunction in ARF patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) compared to tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE). In this retrospective study involving 376 patients diagnosed with ARF and requiring IMV, we extracted clinical and outcome data from patient records.

Introduction: Although Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is critical to control its spread, vaccine hesitancy varies significantly among the United States population; moreover, some vaccine recipients experienced various adverse effects. We aim to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in a university-affiliated community, the factors affecting participants' decisions, and their adverse effects.

Methods: A pre-vaccination online Institutional Review Board IRB-approved survey was emailed in Nov/Dec 2020, 2 months before the implementation of state-policy protocols for COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: Trauma is a leading cause of global death, with 200 000 deaths and over 3 million non-fatal injuries/year in the United States. We aim to assess trauma care value for patients who underwent urgent laparotomies (LAP) and thoracotomies (THO) in our Health Network System.

Methods: Clinical variables (v = 84) from trauma patients (>18 yo) were retrieved retrospectively (Jan-2010 to July-2016) and prospectively (Aug-2016 to Sept-2021) from a Health System warehouse under IRB-approved protocols.
