This report presents a rare case of acute transverse myelitis (ATM) after mumps infection in a 33-year-old male. Symptoms included fever, parotid and scrotal swelling, and subsequent sensory-motor paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed long-segment spinal cord hyperintensity, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed pleocytosis and elevated protein, with positive mumps virus antibodies.

Introduction The study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the early patient outcome and left ventricular function after mitral valve replacement with a tilting disc valve and total preservation. Patients and methods This retrospective observational study includes patients who underwent mitral valve replacement using a tilting disc valve with total preservation of mitral valvular and subvalvular apparatus from July 2021 to August 2022 at a single center. Results The data were reviewed retrospectively for age, sex, comorbidities, operating time, aortic cross-clamp time, cardiopulmonary bypass time, preoperative and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction, mean gradient across the mitral valve, left ventricular diameter, left atrial size, atrial fibrillation, complications, mortality, and early patient outcome.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive disease characterized by endothelial dysfunction and vascular remodeling and is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Although it is independently associated with multiple comorbidities, the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on mortality in patients with PH remains uncertain. To address this issue, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of DM on survival in patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Article Synopsis
  • Nitriles are important compounds used to create various chemicals like pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
  • The study presents a nickel-catalyzed method for converting nitriles to alcohols using molecular hydrogen, involving a sequence of reactions.
  • This method is efficient for different types of nitriles and can be applied to complex drug molecules, producing alcohols that are crucial in many fields such as organic synthesis and energy technology.

Aim of this study was to analyze variation in angulation of trajectories of various skin entry points in transforaminal endoscopic spine surgery with change in the physical parameters, namely, weight, abdominal girth, and body mass index and to validate our hypothesis that posterolateral (PL)-tip of spinous process (TOSP) entry has minimal variation in the angle of trajectory as compared with currently available skin entry points. The study included an analysis of the functional outcomes of these patients who underwent transforaminal endoscopy using the novel PL-TOSP technique, assessing improvements in pain and disability. Entry point in transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) was taken as a rough distance of 10 to 12 cm from midline as proposed by Kambin whereas Yeung and Tsou advised entry point as distance between the center of the disc space and the posterior skin line measured on lateral.
