Introducing an E-learning Solution for Medical Education in Liberia.

Background: The Ebola virus epidemic and civil war in Liberia left the country in need of strengthening the health workforce. E-learning in medical education provides relevant learning opportunities for students, develops faculty competencies, and assists with the retention of healthcare workers. The Stellenbosch University Rural Medical Education Partnership Initiative (SURMEPI), the College of Health and Life Sciences (COHLS) at the University of Liberia (UL), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) formed a partnership to create an e-learning solution for the COHLS.

Foreign body causing chronic subacute small bowel obstruction: an unusual case from Harare Hospital.

This report describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic work up and surgical management of a rare case of a wedge-shaped organic foreign body found lodged transversely in the wall of the terminal ileum at laparotomy in a 74 year old woman operated on for segmental constrictive intestinal obstruction. The presence of foreign bodies in the gastro-intestinal tract as causative agents of intestinal obstruction is discussed.

Perforation of terminal ileum and appendix in typhoid enteritis: report of two cases.

Two cases of simultaneous typhoid perforation of terminal ileum and appendix are reported from Harare Central Hospital. These findings have not been reported before. Perforations were associated with schistosomiasis and HIV/AIDS.

Loss of thymus-distinctive serological characteristics in mice under certain conditions.

The serological properties of thymus cells of inbred mice bearing Ehrlich ascites tumors and treated with cortisol were investigated. Thymusdistinctive antigenicity and sensitivity to the cytotoxic effect of guinea pig serum and rabbit serum were significantly decreased, without change in reactivity to H-2 isoantibodies.
