Introduction: The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) defines sarcopenia as a muscle disease (muscle failure) rooted in adverse muscle changes that accrue across a lifetime; sarcopenia is common among adults of older age. New findings on the hormonal and metabolic characteristics of patients with sarcopenia have aided in developing more targeted therapeutic strategies. However, treating older patients with sarcopenia still poses a number of challenges.

Background/objectives: Influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2 are currently cocirculating with similar seasonality, and both pathogens are characterized by a high mutational rate which results in reduced vaccine effectiveness and thus requires regular updating of vaccine compositions. Vaccine formulations combining seasonal influenza and SARS-CoV-2 strains can be considered promising and cost-effective tools for protection against both infections.

Methods: We used a licensed seasonal trivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine (3×LAIV) as a basis for the development of a modified 3×LAIV/CoV-2 vaccine, where H1N1 and H3N2 LAIV strains encoded an immunogenic cassette enriched with conserved T-cell epitopes of SARS-CoV-2, whereas a B/Victoria lineage LAIV strain was unmodified.

The evolution of man on Earth took place under conditions of constant exposure to background ionizing radiation (IR). From this point of view, it would be reasonable to hypothesize the existence of adaptive mechanisms that enable the human organism to safely interact with IR at levels approximating long-term natural background levels. In some situations, the successful operation of molecular mechanisms of protection against IR is observed at values significantly exceeding the natural background level, for example, in cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined lipid and carbohydrate metabolism as well as adipokines and growth factors in three mouse models with different metabolic disorders: alimentary obesity, leptin-resistant obesity, and diabetes mellitus.
  • In the alimentary obesity model, mice showed moderate liver fat, enlarged adipose tissue, and elevated levels of glucose, adiponectin, and cholesterol.
  • In the leptin-resistant model, severe tissue issues were noted, along with high blood sugar and leptin but low triglycerides and certain growth factors.
  • The diabetes mellitus model revealed a decrease in insulin-producing cells and lower levels of important hormones like adiponectin and leptin, along with high insulin levels.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β or GSK-3B) is a serine-threonine kinase involved in various pathways and cellular processes. Alteration in GSK-3β activity is associated with several neurological diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder, and rare diseases like Rett syndrome. GSK-3β is also implicated in HIV-associated dementia (HAD), as it is upregulated in HIV-1-infected cells and plays a role in neuronal dysfunction.
