Article Synopsis
  • Biomarker guided therapy can enhance treatment for COVID-19 patients, with a focus on evaluating the effectiveness of point-of-care (POC) antibody tests in this context.* -
  • Two POC tests, LumiraDX and RightSign, were assessed for their reliability and ease of use against a standard test, with both showing moderate agreement but differing in accuracy and usability.* -
  • The RightSign test was found to be easier to use and more effective at identifying patients without antibodies compared to the LumiraDX test, despite both tests being associated with clinical outcomes.*

Monoclonal antibodies and recombinant antibody fragments are a very promising therapeutic tool to combat infectious diseases. Due to their unique paratope structure, nanobodies (VHHs) hold several advantages over conventional monoclonal antibodies, especially in relation to viral infections. Influenza A viruses (IAVs) remain a major threat to public health.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease, characterized by the death of upper (UMN) and lower motor neurons (LMN) in the motor cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord. Despite decades of research, ALS remains incurable, challenging to diagnose, and of extremely rapid progression. A unifying feature of sporadic and familial forms of ALS is cortical hyperexcitability, which precedes symptom onset, negatively correlates with survival, and is sufficient to trigger neurodegeneration in rodents.

Importance: Much remains unknown about the extent of and factors that influence clinician-level variation in rates of admission from the emergency department (ED). In particular, emergency clinician risk tolerance is a potentially important attribute, but it is not well defined in terms of its association with the decision to admit.

Objective: To further characterize this variation in rates of admission from the ED and to determine whether clinician risk attitudes are associated with the propensity to admit.

Unlabelled: Cancer patients are at risk for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes due to impaired immune responses. However, the immunogenicity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination is inadequately characterized in this population. We hypothesized that cancer vs non-cancer individuals would mount less robust humoral and/or cellular vaccine-induced immune SARS-CoV-2 responses.
