Supporting disengaged children and young people living with diabetes to self-care: a qualitative study in a socially disadvantaged and ethnically diverse urban area.

Objective: To explore how to enhance services to support the self-care of children and young people (CYP) clinically considered 'disengaged' by diabetes services.

Design: Qualitative study.

Background: Testicular tumours are very rare in children. Germ cell tumours (GCTs) account for the majority of testicular tumours in young people, and embryonal carcinomas are a common component of GCTs in adolescents.

Intermittent versus continuous administration of growth hormone treatment.

Growth hormone treatment given by daily injection was compared with growth hormone given for three weeks of every four. All children had received recombinant human growth hormone for two years before randomisation. Growth velocity decreased in both groups in years one and two of the study but the effect was significantly greater in the group receiving intermittent growth hormone.

Salivary IgA antigliadin antibody as a marker for coeliac disease.

In recent years, serum antibodies to gliadin (AGA) have been reported to be useful markers of coeliac disease. IgA AGA have also been found in intestinal secretions and saliva in coeliac disease and may offer a convenient, non-invasive screening test. In order to test this hypothesis, salivary and serum AGA were measured in children with coeliac disease proved by biopsy and compared with several control groups.

EEG monitoring of therapy for neonatal seizures.

Eleven neonates with seizures had continuous EEGs recorded before and up to several hours after administration of anticonvulsant therapy. Six of seven babies given phenobarbitone responded clinically, but in four of these the EEG showed that seizure discharges either persisted or recurred within two hours. Chloral hydrate had no immediate effect in one case and only a doubtful influence on EEG seizure activity in another.
