Article Synopsis
  • Piedras are small nodules found on hair shafts, with white piedra previously linked to Trichosporon beigelii, now causing a reassessment of its causative agents.
  • The first recorded case of white piedra was identified as being caused by Cutaneotrichosporon debeurmannianum, which was studied using scanning electron microscopy and cultures from Sabouraud medium.
  • Genetic analysis showed 99.6% similarity between the nucleotide sequences of the isolated fungus and the 28S large ribosomal unit rDNA, confirming Cutaneotrichosporon debeurmannianum as the causative agent of this white piedra case.

Recommended standard treatment for leprosy is multidrugtherapy (MDT/WHO), consisting Rifampicin+Dapsone+Clofazimine. Other medications are recommended in cases of resistance, adverse reactions and intolerances, including ROM regimen, Rifampicin+Ofloxacin+Minocycline. Therefore, pharmacovigilance is an important tool in understanding these adverse drug reactions (ADRs), supporting pharmacotherapy management and medication safety.

Article Synopsis
  • CAPA is a common complication in severe COVID-19 patients, but its diagnosis is difficult, often relying on specific tests and clinical criteria.
  • In a study of 15 COVID-19 patients in Brazil, 17 cases of Aspergillus spp. were isolated, leading to diagnoses of probable CAPA in 5 patients based on specific tests and symptoms.
  • Despite treatment with antifungal agents like voriconazole in most cases, the mortality rates were high, highlighting the need for greater awareness and better diagnostic practices for CAPA.

Trichosporonosis corresponds to a systemic fungal disease that leads to high mortality rates and is frequently associated with medical devices. It affects immunosuppressed patients in particular and is strongly linked to acquired human immunodeficiency, organ and tissue transplants, and malignant hematologic diseases such as leukemia and lymphomas. Trichosporon infections have been increasingly reported worldwide; however, little information is available either about their characteristics or the causative microorganism.
