Synthesis and ring opening reactions of a 2-silabicyclo[2.1.0]pentane.

Methyl 2-silabicyclo[2.1.0]pentane-1-carboxylate, obtained by a photochemical intramolecular cyclopropanation reaction of an [small alpha]-allylsilyl-[small alpha]-diazoacetate, undergoes ring opening reactions under different conditions leading to methyl 2-[diisopropyl(methoxy)silylmethyl]cyclopropane-1-carboxylate, a 1-sila-4-cyclopentene-2-carboxylate or an allyl(methoxysilyl)ketene.

Electronic transport in smectic liquid crystals.

Time-of-flight measurements of transient photoconductivity have revealed bipolar electronic transport in phenylnaphthalene and biphenyl liquid crystals (LC), which exhibit several smectic mesophases. In the phenylnaphthalene LC, the hole mobility is significantly higher than the electron mobility and exhibits different temperature and phase behavior. Electron mobility in the range approximately 10(-5) cm(2)/V s is temperature activated and remains continuous at the phase transitions.

Electrophilic nitration of aromatics in ionic liquid solvents.

Potential utility of a series of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium salts [emim][X] with X = OTf-, CF3COO-, and NO3- as well as [HNEtPri2][CF3COO] (protonated Hünig's base) ionic liquids were explored as solvent for electrophilic nitration of aromatics using a variety of nitrating systems, namely NH4NO3/TFAA, isoamyl nitrate/BF3.Et2O, isoamyl nitrate/TfOH, Cu(NO3)/TFAA, and AgNO3/Tf2O. Among these, NH4NO3/TFAA (with [emim][CF3COO], [emim][NO3]) and isoamyl nitrate/BF3.

Macrocyclization of alpha-(alkynyloxy)silyl-alpha-diazoacetates by inter-/intramolecular.

Thermally induced intra-/intermolecular [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction sequences of alpha-(alkynyloxy)silyl-alpha-diazoacetates 1 lead to [3.3](1,4)pyrazolophanes (2)2 and higher cyclooligomers thereof [(2)n, n > 2]. In most cases, the cyclodimer was isolated by crystallization, while a complete separation of the mixture of the higher cyclooligomers was not possible.
