Opinions concerning euthanasia, life-sustaining treatment and acceleration of death: results of an Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) survey.

Background: Advance directives, acceleration of death, euthanasia and 'life-sustaining treatment' have sparked much heated debate among the media, the public, doctors and political leaders. We evaluate the personal opinions of Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) members.

Patients And Methods: A 30-item questionnaire was developed and delivered to all 1,832 AIOM members.

Cardiac toxicity of high-dose chemotherapy.

Cardiac toxicity is an uncommon but potentially serious complication of high-dose (HD) chemotherapy and little is known about incidence, severity and underlying mechanisms. We have systematically reviewed the literature of the last 30 years to summarize and appraise the published evidence on cardiac toxicity associated with HD chemotherapy. HD cyclophosphamide-containing regimens have been most commonly associated with cardiac toxicity, with a progressively decreasing incidence over time.

Chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity: new diagnostic and preventive strategies.

Chemotherapy is an established approach for several malignancies, but its utility may be hampered by induced cardiac toxicity possibly leading to heart failure, with a negative impact on the patient's quality of life and ultimately survival. Prospective left ventricular systolic function monitoring has demonstrated that cardiotoxicity could be subclinically present for many months or years before its overt manifestation. Although considered irreversible, some reports suggested recovery or delayed progression of cardiac dysfunction by preventive cardioactive therapies.

Front-line chemotherapy with cisplatin and etoposide for patients with brain metastases from breast carcinoma, nonsmall cell lung carcinoma, or malignant melanoma: a prospective study.

Background: The conventional treatment of brain metastases not amenable to surgery is most often radiotherapy. Until now, pharmacologic issues related to the blood brain barrier (BBB) prevented a wide evaluation of chemotherapy. The authors previously reported that the combination of cisplatin (P) and etoposide (E) had strikingly high activity in patients with brain metastases from breast carcinoma.
