Objective: Children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often suffer from poor bone growth and impaired bone health. Humanin is a cytoprotective factor expressed in bone and other tissues and we hypothesized that humanin levels are suppressed in conditions of chronic inflammation. To address this, humanin levels were analyzed in serum samples from IBD patients and in cultured human growth plate tissue specimens exposed to IBD serum or TNF alone.

To investigate the mechanism of permanent growth inhibition after transient arrest of DNA replication, we selected genetic suppressor elements (GSEs) conferring resistance to replication inhibitor Aphidicolin. Starting from a retroviral expression library carrying normalized fragments of human cell cDNA, we isolated four GSEs which, when introduced as a combination, produced resistance to Aphidicolin, doxorubicin and hydroxyurea in HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells.

Lipopolysaccharide, determined in the test for ketodesoxyoctanoic acid, was not detected in these fractions, but, as determined in the passive hemagglutination test, the content of O-antigen in the preparations was 3-25%.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA parenteral Shigella ribosomal vaccine (SRV) was investigated in animals for safety, antibody-inducing capacity, and protective activity. Ribosomal preparations from a Shigella sonnei phase I avirulent strain were obtained and shown to possess chemical, sedimentation, and other properties typical of bacterial ribosomes. No endotoxin contamination was revealed by a ketodeoxyoctonate assay, although the presence of some kind of O antigen was evidenced by serological findings and the high activity of SRV in inducing the O-antibody response and immunological memory in animals.
