Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is caused by aberrant activation of the immune system allowing autoreactive B and T cells to target the thyroid gland leading to disease. Although AITD is more frequently diagnosed in adults, children are also affected but rarely studied. Here, we performed phenotypic and functional characterization of peripheral blood immune cells from pediatric and adult-onset AITD patients and age-matched controls using mass cytometry.

Heavy metal contamination of soil and agricultural products is an environmental problem, has an adverse effect on the quality of food crops, and is a danger to food security and public health. The concentration of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) in surface soils and edible hypocotyls tissues of two ecotypes of Walpers (maca) was evaluated in three districts of the Junín province, Peru. In addition, the risk to human health due to exposure to heavy metals from maca consumption was evaluated.

Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), including Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and Graves' disease (GD), is the most common autoimmune disorder in the United States, affecting over 20 million people. At the time of diagnosis, both HD and GD are characterized by the accumulation of B and T lymphocytes in the thyroid gland and production of autoantibodies targeting the thyroid, indicating that a breach in tolerance of autoreactive lymphocytes has occurred. However, few studies have sought to understand the underlying pathogenesis of AITD that ultimately leads to production of autoantibodies and loss of thyroid function.

Background: An extremely elevated erythrosedimentation rate (ESR), defined as equal or higher than 100 mm/h, has been linked to serious underlying conditions, such as infections, connective tissue and oncologic disease.

Aim: To analyze a group of patients in order to determine the underlying diagnosis and the characteristics associated with extremely elevated ESR in our environment.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of adult patients, who presented with at least one ESR equal or higher than 100 mm/h at Hospital Italiano, in Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Argentina) between January 2002 and August 2014.
