Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found tiny particles, called anthropogenic microparticles (AMs), in fish from Antarctica that were collected in 1998.
  • Most of these particles were fibers, both natural and made by humans, like polyester and polypropylene, which are used in clothes and other items.
  • The study shows that pollution from microplastics had already started affecting the Antarctic ocean environment long before we often think it began, helping us understand how pollution has changed over time.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurogenic dysphagia is a swallowing difficulty stemming from nervous system issues, with potential serious complications that can be managed.
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Vitalstim© device in treating a patient with severe dysphagia due to brain injury, comparing conventional rehabilitation to Vitalstim training over six weeks.
  • Results showed significant improvement in swallowing function post-Vitalstim training, suggesting that it may enhance neuroplastic changes in the brain related to swallowing coordination.

We have studied the effects of a high concentration of butanol and octanol on the phase behavior and on the lateral mobility of 1,2-palmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) by means of differential scanning calorimetry and pulsed-gradient stimulated-echo (PGSTE) NMR spectroscopy. A lowering of the lipid transition from the gel to the liquid-crystalline state for the membrane-alcohol systems has been observed. NMR measurements reveal three distinct diffusions in the DPPC-alcohol systems, characterized by a high, intermediate, and slow diffusivity, ascribed to the water, the alcohol, and the lipid, respectively.
