Bacteria coordinate gene expression in a cell density-dependent manner using a communication process called quorum sensing (QS). The expression of virulence factors, biofilm formation and enzyme production are examples of QS-regulated phenotypes that can interfere with food quality and safety. Due to the importance of these phenotypes, the inhibition of bacterial communication as an anti-virulence strategy is of great interest.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for education, particularly in undergraduate teaching. In this study, we report on the experience of how a private university successfully addressed this challenge through an active methodology applied to a microbiology discipline offered remotely to students from various health-related courses (veterinary, physiotherapy, nursing, biomedicine, and nutrition). Remote teaching was combined with the "Adopt a Bacterium" methodology, implemented for the first time on Google Sites.

This work aimed to evaluate the potential of NAC as a QS inhibitor (QSI) in PAO1 through and analyses, as well as in combination with the antibiotic tobramycin.

Wild-caught seafood are broadly consumed worldwide, but exposure to land-based pollution can favor their contamination by clinically relevant antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. As part of the Grand Challenges Explorations: New Approaches to Characterize the Global Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance Program, we performed genomic surveillance and cell culture-based virulence investigation of WHO critical priority Enterobacterales isolated from marine bivalves collected in the Atlantic Coast of South America.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for both teachers and students and a demand for new methodologies of remote learning. In the life sciences, mixing online content with practical activities represents an even greater challenge.
