Host-microbe interactions rewire metabolism in a C. elegans model of leucine breakdown deficiency.

In humans, defects in leucine catabolism cause a variety of inborn errors in metabolism. Here, we use Caenorhabditis elegans to investigate the impact of mutations in mccc-1, an enzyme that functions in leucine breakdown. Through untargeted metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses we find extensive metabolic rewiring that helps to detoxify leucine breakdown intermediates via conversion into previously undescribed metabolites and to synthesize mevalonate, an essential metabolite.

Faa1 membrane binding drives positive feedback in autophagosome biogenesis via fatty acid activation.

Autophagy serves as a stress response pathway by mediating the degradation of cellular material within lysosomes. In autophagy, this material is encapsulated in double-membrane vesicles termed autophagosomes, which form from precursors referred to as phagophores. Phagophores grow by lipid influx from the endoplasmic reticulum into Atg9-positive compartments and local lipid synthesis provides lipids for their expansion.

The association between beta-natriuretic peptide (BNP) serum levels and liberation from mechanical ventilation.

Prolonged time on mechanical ventilation is associated with multiple consequences for both the patient and medical facility. Based on anecdotal evidence that sustained elevation of beta-natriuretic protein (BNP) during a patient's stay in a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) was associated with failure to wean from prolonged mechanical ventilation, we investigated if there is an association between a decrease in BNP levels during one's stay and successful weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation. We performed a retrospective study of 66 patient records revealing no correlation between lowering BNP levels and probability of liberating a patient from prolonged mechanical ventilation in an LTACH environment where the probability of liberation from mechanical ventilation is high (> 85%).

Classical Information and Collapse in Wigner's Friend Setups.

The famous Wigner's friend experiment considers an observer-the friend-and a superobserver-Wigner-who treats the friend as a quantum system and her interaction with other quantum systems as unitary dynamics. This is at odds with the friend describing this interaction via collapse dynamics, if she interacts with the quantum system in a way that she would consider a measurement. These different descriptions constitute the Wigner's friend paradox.
