Background The synthetic opioid tramadol is widely used as a pain reliever. Unlike other opioids, it is used freely worldwide, unaffected by international controls resulting in abuse and accidental intoxication. Rationale & Objective: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions provide both clearance of uremic toxins and sodium and water. An intraperitoneal (IP) solution of icodextrin and glucose designed without the requirement for uremic toxin clearance could provide substantially greater sodium and water removal than PD solutions.

Post translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins play an integral role in maintaining the overall structure and function of proteins including their proper folding, binding, and potency. However, not all PTMs play a positive role in protein drugs as some can lead to product-related impurities that negatively impact protein function. One example of a PTM is trisulfide formation, which appears as a product related species in multiple biologic drug products.
