Backgrounds: In children with sepsis, circulatory shock and multi-organ failure remain major contributors to mortality. Prolonged capillary refill time (PCRT) is a clinical tool associated with disease severity and tissue hypoperfusion. Microcirculation assessment with videomicroscopy represents a promising candidate for assessing and improving hemodynamic management strategies in children with sepsis.

Background: Diesel exhaust (DE) exposures pose concerns for serious health effects, including asthma and lung cancer, in California communities burdened by multiple stressors.

Introduction: Pennebaker's expressive writing (EW) paradigm in which participants are encouraged to explore their "deepest thoughts and feelings" about a difficult experience in several short writing sessions has yielded impressive mental health outcomes and holds great promise as a cost-effective intervention. The environment surrounding a chromophore can dramatically affect the energy absorption and relaxation process, as manifested in optical spectra. Simulations of nonlinear optical spectroscopy, such as two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) and transient absorption (TA), will be influenced by the computational model of the environment. We here compare a fixed point charge molecular mechanics model and a quantum mechanical (QM) model of the environment in computed 2DES and TA spectra of Nile red in water and the chromophore of photoactive yellow protein (PYP) in water and protein environments.
