Clinical, socioeconomic and patient outcomes of intensive versus conventional scaling and root planing in the treatment of periodontal infection.

Purpose: To compare the two non-surgical periodontal treatment methods with regard to socioeconomic aspects, treatment results and complications.

Methods And Results: Twenty-five patients were randomly divided into two groups for non-surgical treatment consisting of scaling and root planing. One group had intensive treatment (InT) performed within 24 h and the other group received conventional treatment (CoT) with one treatment session a week for 4 weeks.

Oral glucose as an analgesic to reduce infant distress following immunization at the age of 3, 5 and 12 months.

Aim: To evaluate oral glucose as an analgesic to reduce infant distress after immunization during the first year of life and to investigate if these effects change during this period.

Methods: A prospective controlled trial of the effectiveness of glucose on crying response to immunizations at 3, 5 and 12 months of age. A total of 110 infants were randomized to receive 2 mL of 30% glucose or water.

Plasma oxytocin levels in women during labor with or without epidural analgesia: a prospective study.

Background: Epidural analgesia (EDA) has been reported to prolong labor. Whether this is by interference with endogenous oxytocin release or other mechanisms is unclear. With increasing numbers of women receiving an EDA, it is important to study its effects on labor.

Lactation mastitis: bacterial cultivation of breast milk, symptoms, treatment, and outcome.

The aim of this prospective study was to compare serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocytes, hemoglobin, clinical signs, treatment, and outcome among 41 episodes of lactation mastitis grouped by the outcome of bacterial cultivation of breast milk. Group A included 25 cases with positive cultures only for bacteria normally present on skin. Group B included 16 cases in which cultures indicated the presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria.
