Article Synopsis
  • The study involved 98 patients with Candida vulvovaginitis (CVV), classifying them into three clinical forms: acute (26 patients), subacute (23 patients), and remission (49 patients).
  • The clinical diagnosis was confirmed in 87.7% of cases through cytology or culture before treatment, and 4% cytologically in remission, with 20 patients showing positive cultures.
  • The findings indicated that in acute CVV, Candida mainly presented in the budding phase (84.4%), while the cytological method proved to be more cost-effective and efficient compared to cultural methods.

Major clinical characteristics of various forms of recurrent chronic external genital candidiasis in females and remission thereof are considered. Cytologic findings in vaginal smears are reported, as are the results of Candida albicans culture in vaginal discharge of patients with acute and subacute recurrences and those with remissions. Cytologic investigation is shown to be very valuable and capable of differentiating between various forms of the pathology when used in combination with the cultures.

The evidence obtained at histologic study of 18 operative specimens from the middle lung involved by early cancer was compared to that obtained at cytological evaluation of the sputum, catheterization and bronchoscopy material. Combined cytologic investigation of the cells resulted in tumor identification in 15 cases, whereas bronchoscopic biopsy was efficient in only 5. The study of the tumor-adjacent bronchi revealed epithelial transformation which can be considered dysplastic.

Previously, there was found a low molecular weight 5S DNA in ascitic fluid of rats and mice with experimental tumors. This report shows the presence of the nucleic factor in ascitic fluid of ovarian tumor patients, its electrophoretic mobility methylene blue staining and the affinity to hydroxyapatite being similar to that in animals. Whereas in patients with persistant ascitis of a nontumor origin such factor was not detected.
