In continuation of our phytochemical study on the aerial part of (Kovalevsk.) Kovalevsk, three new guaiane-type sesquiterpene lactones were isolated namely karatanolide (), 11,13-dihydrokaratanolide () and 11,13-dihydrokaratanolide (), in addition to the two known sesquiterpene lactones 1,10-dihydroxyarglabin () and artefin (). The structures of the isolated sesquiterpene lactones were elucidated by IR and NMR spectroscopy.

The title compound, C16H20O3 [systematic name: 1-hy-droxy-7-meth-oxy-1,6-dimethyl-4-(propan-2-yl)naphthalen-2(1H)-one], is a sesquiterpene isolated from foliar tissues of the cotton plant and is of inter-est with respect to its anti-bacterial properties. Its phenyl ring is ideally planar, and the maximum of deviation in the second ring is 0.386 (3) Å.

The article deals with hygienic evaluation of Ust-Kamenogorsk ambient air pollution with nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, phenol and suspended solids. Ambient air samples were taken in 36 points over 3 days at 6 am, noon, 6 and 9 pm (local time) during warm season (August) and cold season (December). According to the results obtained, the authors divided Ust-Kamenogorsk territory into 2 areas, based on IAP4 (index of air pollution): conditionally dirty area--over 7; conditionally clean area--under 7.

The isolation and structure of a phytoalexin, malvone A (2-methyl-3-methoxy-5,6-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) is reported. Malvone A formation is induced in Malva sylvestris L. by the plant pathogen Verticillium dahliae.

The authors defined diagnostic tests describing adaptational resources under exposure to dust (RBC resistance to hemolysis and silicon oxide content of urine). The testswere studied in apparently healthy miners (shaftmen and mining face workers). Results helped to define criteriafor premorbid diagnosis of dust diseases via those tests.

A procedure was developed for air pollution monitoring, which takes into account the formation of secondary pollutants due to the transformation of initial noxious agents. The formation of chemical compounds for purposeful searches for aromatic hydrocarbon transformation products was predicted in the hygienic evaluation of air pollution. Atmospheric toluene transformation was shown to give rise to phenol and formaldehyde which in the presence of nitrogen dioxide are more toxic than toluene.

A procedure is described for fractionation of phosphoinositides using silica gel thin layer chromatography. The procedure may be used in routine studies as this makes it possible to isolate phosphoinositides by using only one system of solvents. The evidence for isolation of phosphoinositide fractions is discussed.

Spontaneous and evoked biopotentials were recorded on the mammary gland surface in goats. The biopotentials appear in the course of secretion during milk ejection as well as under electrical, mechanical and hormonal actions. They might be considered as adequate indices of secretion and ejection processes in the mammary gland.
