Article Synopsis
  • The contamination of water bodies by heavy metals like copper, lead, mercury, and cadmium is a major environmental and health concern, requiring new remediation strategies that are sustainable and cost-effective.
  • Traditional methods for removing these metals are often expensive and inefficient, leading to the exploration of alternative solutions.
  • Biochar, a carbon-rich material made from organic waste through pyrolysis, shows promise as a low-cost adsorbent for effectively capturing heavy metals in contaminated water, with its effectiveness influenced by factors like feedstock type and production processes.

Article Synopsis
  • Wheat is a vital food crop for global food security, and research was conducted to investigate the impact of nitrogen management and planting patterns on its production at The University of Agriculture Peshawar during the rabi seasons of 2020-21 and 2021-22.
  • The results showed that applying 120 kg of nitrogen per hectare significantly improved various yield parameters and water use efficiency when compared to no nitrogen application, with the M (mixed) and W (wide) planting patterns proving to be the most effective.
  • The study concluded that using a split application of 120 kg N/ha with W and M planting patterns can enhance wheat growth and yields in Peshawar's alkaline soils, reducing the need for higher nitrogen applications

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb), the causative pathogen of tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from single infectious agent. Furthermore, its evolution to multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extremely drug-resistant (XDR) strains necessitate de novo identification of drug-targets/candidates or to repurpose existing drugs against known targets through drug repurposing.

Background: Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is an uncommon neoplasm of mature B-lymphoid cells which is characterized by cytopenias, commonly of all three cell lines, with typical hairy cells on peripheral smear and/or bone marrow along with organomegaly. Objective was to document the outcomes of HCL patients treated at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan.

Methods: Medical records of patients from 2004 to 2020 were reviewed and data was collected to assess patient's demographics, symptomatology, remission rate and overall survival.

Lubricants operate as antifriction media, preserving machine reliability, facilitating smooth operation, and reducing the likelihood of frequent breakdowns. The petroleum-based reserves are decreasing globally, leading to price increases and raising concerns about environmental degradation. The researchers are concentrating their efforts on developing and commercializing an environmentally friendly lubricant produced from renewable resources.

Parvovirus B19 infection can present with myriads of clinical diseases and syndromes; hepatitis and polyarthropathy are a few of these examples. Parvovirus frequently affects children but this condition has also been reported in adults.  The present case report discusses a case of a 43-year-old female who presented to the outpatient department (OPD) with complaints of high-grade fever and pain in multiple joints of her body for three days.

Intracellular pathogens have evolved various efficient molecular armaments to subvert innate defenses. Cellular ubiquitination, a normal physiological process to maintain homeostasis, is emerging one such exploited mechanism. Ubiquitin (Ub), a small protein modifier, is conjugated to diverse protein substrates to regulate many functions.

The causal relationship of thrombocytopenia with statin intake has been described in many research articles. Our case discusses the refractory nature of thrombocytopenia in a 22-year-old female, one month following a daily intake of 20 mg atorvastatin. This is the first case ever of drug-induced refractory thrombocytopenia reported in a young patient.

Objectives: This study was aimed at evaluating the correlation and reproducibility of gingival thickness quantification using digital and direct clinical assessment methods.

Materials And Methods: Patients in need of tooth extraction were allocated into two groups according to the gingival thickness measurement method, either using an endodontic spreader (pre-extraction) or a spring caliper (post-extraction), both on the mid-facial (FGT) and mid-lingual (LGT). Pre-extraction Digital Imaging and COmmunications in Medicine (DICOM) and STereoLithography (STL) files of the arch of interest were obtained and merged for corresponding digital measurements.

Background: Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have already found different migraine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). To further check if these variants differ by ethnicity, three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs4379368, rs10504861and rs11172113) were genotyped here to find association with migraine susceptibility from North Indian population.

Methods And Results: A case control study in 200 subjects was done by polymerase chain reaction and restriction-fragment-length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • A 25-year-old pregnant woman was referred to the Medical Unit after experiencing fever, jaundice, itchy skin, night sweats, and weight loss for four weeks.
  • Her liver function tests indicated cholestasis, and an ERCP revealed abnormal bile duct changes suggesting sclerosing cholangitis, while Doppler ultrasound of her veins was normal.
  • After poor response to initial treatments, a liver biopsy confirmed Hodgkin's lymphoma, but despite transfer to an oncology unit, she succumbed to severe liver damage—marking a rare case of secondary sclerosing cholangitis associated with this type of cancer.
