Article Synopsis
  • Ethylene glycol (EG) is a common chemical that is toxic and can cause severe metabolic acidosis and death, often leading to renal failure due to the formation of calcium oxalate (CO) crystals.
  • While CO crystals are commonly found in the kidneys during autopsies, their presence in other organs like the brain and lungs is less frequently studied.
  • This report analyzes 18 cases of EG toxicity and finds CO crystals most frequently in the kidneys, but also in the brain and lungs, suggesting that their deposition in these organs may play a significant role in EG toxicity.

Introduction: Same-day discharge (SDD) after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has been shown to be feasible and safe. In order to improve uptake of this ambulatory model in Canada, we aimed to update our experience of SDD after RARP and identify reasons for SDD pathway non-initiation and failure in a universal healthcare system.

Methods: A review of our prospectively collected database of patients undergoing RARP at a Canadian tertiary academic center from May 2021 to May 2023 was conducted.

Four new psammaplysin derivatives (1-4) with fatty acyl substituents, designated irciniaplysins A-D, and three known psammaplysins (5-7) were isolated from a marine sponge Ircinia sp. Their structures were elucidated using extensive spectroscopic analyses. The positions of the double bonds and the branch points of the fatty acyl side chains were determined by GC-MS analysis of their fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) derivatives.

Introduction: Postoperative imaging for deceased donor renal transplants is often delayed, as these surgeries occur after-hours. These delays can be critical in identifying immediate complications. To our knowledge, there are no formal training programs for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in this setting; therefore, we aimed to develop and evaluate a feasible and practical POCUS curriculum for the assessment of a renal transplant graft.

Congenital syphilis is a serious, disabling, and life-threatening infection that is transmitted transplacentally from mother to fetus. Early diagnosis is often difficult because affected infants are usually asymptomatic at birth and clinical findings are often subtle and nonspecific. Pemphigus syphiliticus is an early presentation of congenital syphilis which is characterized by fluid-filled vesicles and bullae which appear mostly on the extremities and tend to rapidly desquamate and erode.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a naturally derived hydrogel that has recently paved its way in several biomedical applications. Despite its remarkable tissue-like properties, BNC does not express innate anticoagulant or antimicrobial properties; therefore, appropriate post-modification procedures are required to prevent nonspecific adhesion and enhance the hemocompatibility properties of BNC-based biointerface. Here, we report a new class of flexible, lubricant-infused BNC membranes with superior antithrombotic and antibacterial properties.
