Purpose: Extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) carries a dismal prognosis. The benefit of consolidative thoracic radiotherapy (TR) after first-line chemoimmunotherapy with PD-L1 inhibitors in this setting remains unclear. As TR can improve overall survival (OS) after conventional chemotherapy, we retrospectively analyzed OS of an inhouse cohort treated either with TR or with chemoimmunotherapy alone.

Spicules are rapidly evolving fine-scale jets of magnetized plasma in the solar chromosphere. It remains unclear how these prevalent jets originate from the solar surface and what role they play in heating the solar atmosphere. Using the Goode Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory, we observed spicules emerging within minutes of the appearance of opposite-polarity magnetic flux around dominant-polarity magnetic field concentrations.

Plant nucleotide-sugar transporters (NSTs) are responsible for the import of nucleotide-sugar substrates into the Golgi lumen, for subsequent use in glycosylation reactions. NSTs are specific for either GDP- or UDP-sugars, and almost all transporters studied to date have been isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana L. In order to determine the conservation of the import mechanism in other higher plant species, here we report the identification and characterisation of VvGONST-A and VvGONST-B from grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.

Mating shuts down a 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME)-dependent, non-genomic activity that is responsible for accelerating egg transport in the rat oviduct. The aims of this work were to investigate the role of TGFβ1 in this 2ME-reduced activity and to determine the effect of mating on the expression and distribution of TGFβ1 and its receptor TGFBR3 in the rat oviduct. We determined the level of TGFβ1 in the plasma and oviductal fluid at 1, 3, or 6 hr during Day 1 of the oestrous cycle in unmated or mated animals.

Mating shut down a 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME) nongenomic action necessary to accelerate egg transport in the rat oviduct. Herein, we investigated whether tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) participates in this mating effect. In unmated and mated rats, we determined the concentration of TNF-α in the oviductal fluid and the level of the mRNA for Tnf-a (Tnf) and their receptors Tnfrsf1a and Tnfrsf1b in the oviduct tissues.

After resuscitation of the cardiac arrest patient, reperfusion to the brain begins a cascade of events that may lead to permanent brain damage. Cooling suppresses the inflammatory response related to ischemia and metabolic demand, improving oxygen supply to anoxic areas. Until recently, cooling was only performed in the hospital setting.

The preparation and characterization of three new macrocyclic ligands with pendant arms based on the [2+2] condensation of isophthalaldehyde and the corresponding triamine substituted at the central N-atom is reported. None of these new macrocyclic ligands undergo any equilibrium reaction, based on imine hydrolysis to generate [1+1] macrocyclic formation or higher oligomeric compounds, such as [3+3], [4+4], etc., at least within the time scale of days.

Copper(I)/(II) complexes with the ligand 2-aminoethyl(2-pyridylmethyl)1,2-ethanediamine (apme, abbreviated as PDT in the literature as well) were prepared and characterized. Crystal structures of the copper(I) complexes, [Cu2(apme)2]X2 (1, 2; X=ClO4, CF3SO3), showed that they are dinuclear, in contrast to the trigonal bipyramidal copper(II) complexes [Cu(apme)Cl]BPh4 (3) and [Cu(apme)(DMF)](BPh4)2 (4). 1 and 2 could be investigated in solution by NMR spectroscopy and 3 and 4 by cyclovoltammetry.

Intramolecular ligand hydroxylation was observed during the reactions of dioxygen with the dicopper(I) complexes of the ligands L(1)(L(1)=alpha,alpha'-bis[(2-pyridylethyl)amino]-m-xylene) and L(3)(L(3)=alpha, alpha'-bis[N-(2-pyridylethyl)-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]-m-xylene). The dinuclear copper(I) complex [Cu(2)L(3)](ClO(4))(2) and the dicopper(II) complex [Cu(2)(L(1)-O)(OH)(ClO(4))]ClO(4) were characterized by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. Furthermore, phenolate-bridged complexes were synthesized with the ligand L(2)-OH (structurally characterized [Cu(2)(L(2)-O)Cl(3)] with L(2)=alpha, alpha'-bis[N-methyl-N-(2-pyridylethyl)amino]-m-xylene; synthesized from the reaction between [Cu(2)(L(2)-O)(OH)](ClO(4))(2) and Cl(-)) and Me-L(3)-OH: [Cu(2)(Me-L(3)-O)(mu-X)](ClO(4))(2)xnH(2)O (Me-L(3)-OH = 2,6-bis[N-(2-pyridylethyl)-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]-4-methylphenol and X = C(3)H(3)N(2)(-)(prz), MeCO(2)(-) and N(3)(-)).

Data on long-term follow-up for definitive therapy of prostate cancer are limited, especially for radiation therapy. Either surgery or radiation was used in 322 patients for treatment with curative intent, and follow-up was for a minimum of 15 years. Overall survival was nearly identical to that in age-matched cohort.

Experience with carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the urinary bladder during a twenty-year period at the Mayo Clinic is reviewed. The most important clinical clues for diagnosis of this disease continue to be irritative bladder symptoms in the absence of infection in elderly men and a history of transurethral resection of the prostate. The most reliable method of diagnosis is urinary cytology.

Past and present methods of treatment for patients with stage D1 (T1-4 N+ MO) transitional cell cancer of the urinary bladder have proved to be largely ineffective. This report on 57 patients with stage D1 disease confirms this impression and demonstrates that radical operation alone is associated with a 5-year survival rate of only 10%. Survival is related to tumour grade and to the number of pelvic lymph nodes involved; furthermore, complete lymphadenectomy may contribute to improved patient survival.

We have developed a combined modality approach for treatment of locally advanced prostate cancer consisting of: surgical staging with lymphadenectomy; transperineal placement of afterloading needles for a course of 192Ir brachytherapy; and a course of moderate-dose external beam irradiation to tight prostatic fields. The flexibility of the treatment permits adaptation of the dose to any tumor configuration. A total of 23 patients have been treated to date; 18 are available for treatment review and 14 for acute toxicity analysis.

Androgen binding (cytosol and nucleus) was measured in tissue obtained from 223 untreated patients with proven prostate cancer (199 primary tumor, 24 malignant lymph nodes), 19 patients with hormone refractory cancer, and 46 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The mean binding in both the cytosol and nucleus was significantly higher for patients with cancer than for those with BPH. Binding appeared to correlate with tumor stage.

A series of 105 patients with surgical Stage C adenocarcinoma of the prostate underwent pelvic lymphadenectomy and radical retropubic prostatectomy and were followed up from one and one-half to fifteen years; 33 (31%) of the 105 had clinical Stage C disease. Of the 105 patients, 92 were at risk for greater than or equal to two years, 42 for greater than or equal to five years, and 12 for greater than or equal to ten years. Survival and disease progression were related to tumor grade (Mayo grades 1 through 4) and tumor bulk (less than 3, 3 to 10, greater than 10 cm3) but not to seminal vesicle involvement.
