Simple Clinical Score to Predict 24-Week Survival Times in Patients with Inoperable Malignant Distal Biliary Obstruction as a Tool for Selecting Palliative Metallic or Plastic Stents.

Background And Aim: Endoscopic biliary drainage (EBD) is the mainstay treatment for inoperable malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO). Some authorities suggest that metallic stents are more cost-effective than plastic stents in patients with expected survival of at least 6 months. However, studies attempting to define the predictive factors for such survival times are limited.

The significance of galectin-3 immunohistochemistry, clinical characteristics and liver imaging in differentiating intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma from adenocarcinoma liver metastasis.

Objective: To identify differences of Galectin-3 (Gal-3) immunostaining, clinical profiles, and images in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHC) and adenocarcinoma liver metastasis, and be able to recognize these parameters as diagnostic tools for differentiating these two diseases.

Material And Method: Histological slides from patients with IHC and adenocarcinoma liver metastasis were reviewed Immunohistochemical staining for Gal-3, Cytokeratin-7 (CK-7), and Cytokeratin-20 (CK-20) was performed and the results categorized. Moreover clinical characteristics and liver images of the patients were reviewed.

Endoscopic stenting versus surgical bypass in advanced malignant distal bile duct obstruction: cost-effectiveness analysis.

Objective: Palliative treatment of obstructive jaundice from advanced tumour of the distal bile duct is controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes and costs between endoscopic stent insertion and surgery.

Methods: The clinical data for 116 patients treated with either endoscopic plastic stenting (65 patients) or surgical bypass (51 patients) were reviewed and analysed.
