The filamentous, non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Microcoleus chthonoplastes is a cosmopolitan organism, known to build microbial mats in a variety of different environments. Although most of these cyanobacterial mats are known for their capacity to fix dinitrogen, M. chthonoplastes has not been assigned as a diazotrophic organism.

Synechococcus is a cosmopolitan genus of picocyanobacteria living in the photic zone of freshwater and marine ecosystems. Here, we describe the isolation of 46 closely related picocyanobacterial strains from the Baltic Sea. The isolates showed considerable variation in their cell size and pigmentation phenotypes, yielding a colorful variety of red, pink and blue-green strains.

Nitrate and phosphate concentrations higher than those found in the natural environment slowed down growth of two strains of non-bloom-forming, phycoerythrin-rich Synechococcus spp. isolated from mesotrophic subalpine lakes. The results make clear why isolation of these picocyanobacteria in standard cultivation media was difficult.

The dazzling diversity of the phytoplankton has puzzled biologists for decades. The puzzle has been enlarged rather than solved by the progressive discovery of new phototrophic microorganisms in the oceans, including picocyanobacteria, pico-eukaryotes, and bacteriochlorophyll-based and rhodopsin-based phototrophic bacteria. Physiological and genomic studies suggest that natural selection promotes niche differentiation among these phototrophic microorganisms, particularly with respect to their photosynthetic characteristics.

Small, coccoid and rod-shaped Synechococcus-type cyanobacteria with either phycoerythrin or phycocyanin as major accessory pigments were isolated from several large, temperate-zone lakes and the brackish Baltic Sea. The picocyanobacteria had two ribosomal operons with a long internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) separating the 16S rDNA and 23S rDNA. A 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis assigned all isolates to the picophytoplankton clade [sensu Urbach, E.
