Article Synopsis
  • In Gram-negative bacteria, stress-induced growth arrest leads to the release of hydrogen sulfide, which comes from the breakdown of intracellular cysteine to prevent toxic accumulation.
  • Research using electrochemical sensors showed that both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria produce sulfide during growth arrests caused by low nutrients or antibiotics, with notable changes in physiological parameters.
  • Differences in sulfide production between the two types of bacteria are attributed to the absence of glutathione in Gram-positive bacteria, suggesting that this process may represent a previously unknown natural source of hydrogen sulfide.

Cysteine and its derivatives, including HS, can influence bacterial virulence and sensitivity to antibiotics. In minimal sulfate media, HS is generated under stress to prevent excess cysteine and, together with incorporation into glutathione and export into the medium, is a mechanism of cysteine homeostasis. Here, we studied the features of cysteine homeostasis in LB medium, where the main source of sulfur is cystine, whose import can create excess cysteine inside cells.

Chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) is an essential part of anticancer therapy used for malignant tumors (mainly melanoma and glioblastoma); however, the long-term effects on patient health and life quality are not fully investigated. Considering that tumors often occur in elderly patients, the present study was conducted on long-term (4 months) treatment of adult Wistar rats (9 months old, n=40) with TMZ and/or dexamethasone (DXM) to investigate potential behavioral impairments or morphological and molecular changes in their brain tissues. According to the elevated plus maze test, long-term use of TMZ affected the anxiety of the adult Wistar rats, although no significant deterioration of brain morphology or cellular composition of the brain tissue was revealed.

Metabolic rearrangements that occur during depletion of essential nutrients can lead to accumulation of potentially dangerous metabolites. Here we showed that depletion of phosphate (P), accompanied by a sharp inhibition of growth and respiration, caused a transient excess of intracellular cysteine due to a decrease in the rate of protein synthesis. High cysteine level can be dangerous due to its ability to produce ROS and reduce Fe to Fenton-reactive Fe.

The ability of hydrogen sulfide (HS) to protect bacteria from bactericidal antibiotics has previously been described. The main source of HS is the desulfurization of cysteine, which is either synthesized by cells from sulfate or transported from the medium, depending on its composition. Applying electrochemical sensors and a complex of biochemical and microbiological methods, changes in growth, respiration, membrane potential, SOS response, HS production and bacterial survival under the action of bactericidal ciprofloxacin and bacteriostatic chloramphenicol in commonly used media were studied.

Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated the ability to use the brain activity of a group of individuals to forecast the behavior of an independent group. In the current study, we attempted to forecast aggregate choices in a popular restaurant chain. During our functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, 22 participants were exposed to 78 photos of dishes from a new menu of a popular restaurant chain.

Language lateralization is the most intriguing trait of functional asymmetry for cognitive functions. Nowadays, ontogenetic determinants of this trait are largely unknown, but there are efforts to find its anatomical correlates. In particular, a white matter interhemispheric connection-the corpus callosum-has been proposed as such.

Background: Recent studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 can have neuropsychiatric consequences and has the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. If SARS-CoV-2 has a specific route of entry into the brain, it may leave imprints in the form of specific changes in brain morphology. Older individuals are most vulnerable to the neuropsychiatric COVID-19 complications.

Schizophrenia is a socially significant mental disorder resulting frequently in severe forms of disability. Diagnosis, choice of treatment tactics, and rehabilitation in clinical psychiatry are mainly based on the assessment of behavioral patterns, socio-demographic data, and other investigations such as clinical observations and neuropsychological testing including examination of patients by the psychiatrist, self-reports, and questionnaires. In many respects, these data are subjective and therefore a large number of works have appeared in recent years devoted to the search for objective characteristics (indices, biomarkers) of the processes going on in the human body and reflected in the behavioral and psychoneurological patterns of patients.

Cryogelation is a developing technique for the production of polysaccharide materials for biomedical applications. The formation of a macroporous structure during the freeze-drying of polysaccharide solutions creates biomaterials suitable for tissue engineering. Due to its availability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity, chitin is a promising natural polysaccharide for the production of porous materials for tissue engineering; however, its use is limited due to the difficulty of dissolving it.

Introduction: Associations of disturbances in innate and adaptive immunity during the clinical course of schizophrenia have been found in a number of studies. Yet, the relationship of immune parameters and systemic inflammation in relation to the clinical course of the disease and its prognosis, remains poorly understood, which highlights an interesting topic for further research. The goal of this study was to research the immuno-inflammatory changes in patients with clinical continuous and episodic paranoid schizophrenia, to assess the pathogenetic significance of these changes.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are endogenous, single-stranded, most frequently non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecules that play a significant role in gene expression regulation. Circular RNAs can affect microRNA functionality, interact with RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), translate proteins by themselves, and directly or indirectly modulate gene expression during different cellular processes. The affected expression of circRNAs, as well as their targets, can trigger a cascade of events in the genetic regulatory network causing pathological conditions.

Trust forms the basis of virtually all interpersonal relationships. Although significant individual differences characterize trust, the driving neuropsychological signatures behind its heterogeneity remain obscure. Here, we applied a prediction framework in two independent samples of healthy participants to examine the relationship between trust propensity and multimodal brain measures.

The asymptotic, R → ∞, behavior of the potential-energy and dipole-moment functions (PEFs and DMFs) for all six (1,2)Σ+, (1,2)Π, Σ-, and Δ electronic states converging to the ground C(3P) + O(3P) dissociation limit of the CO molecule are studied in the framework of long-range (LR) perturbation theory. The analytical expressions for the leading coefficients of the LR expansion, C5/R5 for PEF and d4/R4 for DMF, in terms of the atomic quadrupole constants and static dipole polarizabilities are derived. The exact relationships between the LR coefficients for the states of different spatial symmetry are established as well.

Deficits in cognitive function are a major characteristic of schizophrenia. Many functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies examine brain correlates of cognitive function in adults with schizophrenia, showing altered implication of associative areas such as the prefrontal cortex and temporal cortex. fMRI studies also examine brain representation of cognitive function in adolescents with early onset schizophrenia and those at risk of the disorder, yet results are often inconsistent.

Altered functional connectivity of the amygdala has been observed in a resting state immediately after fear learning, even one day after aversive exposure. The persistence of increased resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the amygdala has been a critical finding in patients with stress and anxiety disorders. However, longitudinal changes in amygdala rsFC have rarely been explored in healthy participants.
