Transmission pipelines belong to technical infrastructure, the condition of which is subject to periodic monitoring. The research was to verify whether aerial measurement methods, especially UAV laser scanning, could determine the geometric shape of pipelines with a precision similar to that of terrestrial scanning, adopted as a reference method. The test object was a section of a district heating pipeline with two types of surfaces: matte and glossy.

Spline functions are a useful tool for modelling the shape of shell structures. They have curvature continuity that allows good approximation accuracy for various objects, including hyperboloid cooling towers, spherical domes, paraboloid bowls of radio telescopes, or many other types of smooth free surfaces. Spline models can be used to determine the displacement of structures based on point clouds from laser scanning or photogrammetry.
