Effects of high somatic cell counts in milk on reproductive hormones and oestrus behaviour in dairy cows with special reference to those with concurrent lameness.

The present investigation aims to establish the reason(s) why dairy cows with high somatic cell counts (SCCs; >100,000 cells/ml) are less fertile than cows with low SCCs alone. The objective of Study One was to determine whether differences in steroid hormone profiles could explain the low incidence of ovulation in cows with combined High SCC and lameness. Between 30 and 80 days post-partum, animals were scored for SCC and lameness and three groups were formed: Healthy (n=22), High SCC alone (n=12) or High SCC + Lame (n=9).

Speech aid prosthesis.

Velopharyngeal defects are common problem encountered in dentistry, different prosthetic designs can be used; however, the prosthesis should be comfortable and function properly. Surgical treatment is the treatment of choice, but there are few patients who are not able to receive the surgical intervention; in such cases prosthetic management is considered using speech bulb prosthesis to overcome nasal twang and nasal regurgitation.

Retrospective study of clinical and hematological aspects associated with dogs naturally infected by Hepatozoon canis in Ludhiana, Punjab, India.

Objective: To evaluate clinical and hematological aspects of dogs naturally infected with Hepatozoon canis (H. canis) presented at the Small Animal Clinics of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana.

Methods: Blood films of 34 naturally infected dogs were examined for haematological alterations and parasitaemia.

Introduction: The determination of physiologic rest position of the mandible to the maxillae is of paramount importance in almost all fields of dentistry. The stability of vertical dimension at rest has been controversial if the rest position of mandible remains constant throughout life or not. Despite of several studies on the rest position of the mandible and facial vertical dimension, certain fundamental disagreements remain unresolved.

Transplacental transmission of Babesia equi (Theileria equi) from carrier mares to foals.

This article communicates the first per-acute and fatal clinical report of transplacental transmission of Theileria equi from carrier mothers to foals from Punjab, India. Two cases of equine piroplasmosis due to T. equi were diagnosed in neonatal foals borne to Throughbred mares.

Novasure as a mechanical endometrial preparation agent in large uteri.

Objective: We evaluated Novasure ablation as a mechanical endometrial preparation agent before Roller Ball endometrial ablation in lieu of GnRH agonists in large uteri.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of 20 consecutive patients undergoing Novasure ablation for mechanical endometrial preparation before Roller Ball ablation (RBNovasure group) was conducted and the results compared to that of 23 consecutive patients who received GnRH agonist (Leuprolide acetate) as a medical endometrial preparation before Roller Ball ablation (RB-Lupron group). The postoperative follow-up time frame was divided into immediate (3 mo), intermediate (3 to 12 mo) and long-term (12 to 32 mo).

Modified technique of soft liner application.

Soft liners are materials that can be advocated successfully to manage clinical situations like atrophic edentulous ridges with flabby displaceable tissues and in cases of severely resorbed ridges which adversely affect the retention and stability of complete dentures and further enhance bone loss. Soft liner provides a cushioning effect and distributes uniform occlusal forces to compromised residual ridges. In this paper a modified technique of soft liner application in mandibular denture has been discussed.

Terpenoids from Zingiber officinale (Ginger) induce apoptosis in endometrial cancer cells through the activation of p53.

Novel strategies are necessary to improve chemotherapy response in advanced and recurrent endometrial cancer. Here, we demonstrate that terpenoids present in the Steam Distilled Extract of Ginger (SDGE) are potent inhibitors of proliferation of endometrial cancer cells. SDGE, isolated from six different batches of ginger rhizomes, consistently inhibited proliferation of the endometrial cancer cell lines Ishikawa and ECC-1 at IC(50) of 1.

Prolonged postoperative venous thrombo-embolism prophylaxis is cost-effective in advanced ovarian cancer patients.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cost-effectiveness of prolonged prophylaxis with enoxaparin in high-risk surgical patients with ovarian cancer. In addition, we sought to quantify the impact of prolonged prophylaxis (PP) on the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), its related complications, and overall patient survival.

Methods: A Markov decision analytic model was used to estimate the costs, resource allocation and outcomes associated with the prolonged use of enoxaparin, for a total of four weeks after surgery, in patients undergoing primary debulking surgery for stage IIIC ovarian cancer.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 gene polymorphism in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Objectives: Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) regulates several biological functions, and low plasma levels of IGF-1 are known to contribute towards the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In view of the biological significance of IGF-1, we investigated the association of RA with the polymorphism of a 192-bp allele which is cytosine-adenosine repeat located 1 kb upstream from the IGF-1 gene transcription site and is known to regulate serum IGF-1 levels.

Methods: Blood samples were collected from 52 healthy controls (HC) and 68 RA patients to measure the levels of IGF-1 and to isolate genomic DNA.

Tear of Retinal Pigment Epithelium following YAG Laser Posterior Capsulotomy in a Patient on Anti-VEGF Treatment for AMD: Six Months' Follow-Up.

Purpose: To present a rare case of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) rupture following YAG laser posterior capsulotomy (YAG PC) in a patient with exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Day-to-day variability in intraocular pressure in glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Aims: To investigate the day-to-day repeatability of intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements.

Methods: A prospective cohort study of untreated patients presenting with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension presenting with IOP>21 mm Hg. IOP was measured by masked Goldmann tonometry at 08:00, 11:00 and 16:00 at each of the three weekly visits.

Palatoplasty in a patient with Seckel syndrome.

We report a rare case of a patient of Seckel syndrome having cleft palate born to nonconsanguineous married parents. This 8-year-old male child underwent successful palatoplasty under general anesthesia. Till date there are approximately 60 cases of Seckel syndrome reported in the literature.

Incisor tooth in the nose: anecdotal sequel to dog bite in a 3-year-old child.

A 3-year-old male child presented to the casualty with history of unprovoked dog bite over the right lateral wall of nose. He was managed conservatively with antirabies prophylaxis and dressings. He presented after 3 months with a healed wound and the right upper central incisor projecting into the nostril.

Multi-layered plasma-polymerized chips for SPR-based detection.

The surface functionalization of a noble metal is crucial in a surface plasmon resonance-based biomolecular detection system because the interfacial coating must retain the activity of immobilized biomolecules while enhancing the optimal loading. We present here a one-step, room-temperature, high-speed, gas-phase plasma polymerization process for functionalizing gold substrates using siloxane as an adhesion layer and acrylic acid as a functional layer. Siloxane- and thiol-based coatings were compared for their performance as adhesion and the interfacial layer for subsequent functionalization.

Role of negative pressure wound therapy in healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

Introduction: Foot disorders such as ulceration, infection and gangrene are the most common, complex and costly sequelae of diabetes mellitus.[1-3] Even for the most superficial wounds, treatment is often difficult with poor healing responses and high rates of complications. The purpose of this study is to compare the rate of ulcer healing with the negative pressure dressing technique to conventional moist dressings in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.

How do macro-level contexts and policies affect the employment chances of chronically ill and disabled people? Part II: The impact of active and passive labor market policies.

The authors investigate three hypotheses on the influence of labor market deregulation, decommodification, and investment in active labor market policies on the employment of chronically ill and disabled people. The study explores the interaction between employment, chronic illness, and educational level for men and women in Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, countries with advanced social welfare systems and universal health care but with varying types of active and passive labor market policies. People with chronic illness were found to fare better in employment terms in the Nordic countries than in Canada or the United Kingdom.

Low employment rates of chronically ill and disabled people are of serious concern. Being out of work increases the risk of poverty and social exclusion, which may further damage the health of these groups, exacerbating health inequalities. Macro-level policies have a potentially tremendous impact on their employment chances, and these influences urgently need to be understood as the current economic crisis intensifies.

Monocular trial of intraocular pressure-lowering medication: a prospective study.

Objective: To investigate the validity of the monocular therapeutic trial of therapy in patients commencing topical glaucoma treatment.

Design: Prospective intention-to-treat cohort study of untreated patients presenting with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Participants: We included 30 treatment-naïve subjects.

Supernumerary nostril: A rare congenital anomaly.

We report the 23(rd) case of the world of one of the rare congenital anomalies, supernumerary nostril. The disease has a variable presentation and more than half of the reported cases are from Asian continent. This patient had a supernumerary nostril in the form of a accessory blind tract above the left ala.

A clinico-epidemiologic study of 892 patients with burn injuries at a tertiary care hospital in Punjab, India.

Aim: To analyze the causes, demographic and socio-cultural aspects, and the magnitude of burn injuries prospectively and to evaluate the outcome of treatment of patients admitted to burns ICU of tertiary care hospital.

Materials And Methods: A total of 892 burn patients admitted over a period of 6 years from January 2002 to December 2007 at tertiary care hospital in Punjab, India, were analyzed.

Results: 54% patients were males.
