Background: This study aimed to assess the prognostic and predictive implications of CD47, CD68, and CD163, biomarkers of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), on the treatment efficacy and clinical outcomes of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Additionally, the prognostic value of TAM-related indices, such as the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and monocyte-to-albumin ratio (MAR), was evaluated.

Methods: A retrospective cohort of 54 patients with locally advanced or oligometastatic NPC treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), with or without induction chemotherapy, was analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between delirium and tryptophan (TRP) along with its metabolites in older critically ill patients (aged >60) admitted to an ICU, involving 120 participants.* -
  • Results showed that patients with delirium had significantly higher levels of kynurenine (KYN)/TRP and quinolinic acid (QA)/TRP ratios and lower TRP levels compared to those without delirium, with the KYN/TRP ratio being a strong predictor for delirium.* -
  • The findings suggest that measuring tryptophan and its metabolites within the first 24 hours of ICU admission may help identify patients at high risk for developing delirium.*

  • This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of the pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, using a sample of 71 patients predominantly treated with the FOLFIRINOX regimen.
  • The results showed that high PIV values significantly correlated with increased mortality and poorer survival outcomes, with median overall survival being 9 months for high PIV patients compared to 26 months for those with lower values.
  • The findings suggest that PIV can serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker for patient outcomes in advanced pancreatic cancer and highlight the need for further research to confirm these results.

Aim: Tryptophan (TRP), an essential amino acid, undergoes catabolism through various pathways. Notably, the kynurenine pathway (KP), constituting one of these pathways, exhibits a unidirectional impact on immune response and energy metabolism. Nonetheless, its influence on pain sensation is characterized by biphasic dynamics.

Background: We aimed to determine the common genotypes in Ağrı, Türkiye and to obtain information on the transmission of this parasite.

Methods: Cystic echinococcosis samples from 100 slaughtered cattle and 100 slaughtered sheep and faecal samples from 200 stray dogs were included in 2021. Collected cyst fluid samples and faces were examined microscopically.

Background: Multiple myeloma is a complex disease and supportive care is important for improving quality of life. Management of disease treatment symptoms, bone disease, renal dysfunction, infection, anemia, pain, and coagulation disorder are specific issues. Spirituality, or spiritual well-being, is one of the most fundamental and essential concepts for coping with the difficulties and stress caused by cancer.

The incidence or prevalence of Lyme arthritis (LA) in Denmark is unknown and assumed very low. No published cases of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed LA from Denmark exist. Clinically, LA does not differ from other rheumatic oligoarthritic disorders posing a differential diagnostic challenge.

Tube manufacturers use different composition of gels and blood clot activator formulations in serum tube production. Our aim was to investigate the within-tube (repeatability) and between-tube variation, concordance between comparison results of BD and VacuSEL tubes. Blood samples were collected from control subjects (n = 20) and patients (n = 30) in accordance with the CLSI GP41-A6 and CLSI GP34-A guidelines.

Background: Bleeding remains the leading cause of potentially preventable deaths both in military and civilian pre-hospital trauma settings. Conventional extremity tourniquets do not control bleeding if an iliac artery or a common femoral artery is injured. Stopping junctional bleeding is particularly challenging and requires the use of specifically designed junctional tourniquets.

In this study, it was aimed to assess effects of subclinical hyperthyroidism (SH) on bone metabolism using osteoprotegerin (OPG), sclerostin, Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and biochemical parameters. This cross-sectional prospective study included 40 patients with SH and 40 euthyroid controls. Serum OPG, sclerostin, DKK-1, type-1 procollagen, C-terminal polypeptide (CTx) and 24-hours urine N-terminal telopeptide (NTx) were measures using ELISA kit.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots can identify common errors in clinical laboratories through a series of case scenarios and questions focused on pre-analytical, analytical, and postanalytical processes.
  • Four chatbots were assessed on their ability to accurately answer 60 questions, with the accuracy of their responses evaluated by three independent laboratory experts.
  • The findings showed that AI models like CopyAI and ChatGPT v4.0 outperformed ChatGPT-3.5, suggesting that with further training and validation, AI could play a significant role in improving data accuracy in clinical settings.

In September 2021, a Finnish political party, the Greens, voted to include cannabis policy reform in their party programme, which would legalise the use, possession, manufacture and sale of cannabis. A rapid public discussion has emerged on different social media platforms, including Twitter. We downloaded 10 days of Twitter data and prepared it for further text analysis, including sentiment, topic modelling and thematic content analysis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease accompanied by increased release of proinflammatory cytokines that are known to activate the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO-1) enzyme, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step of the kynurenine pathway (KP). This study aimed to measure KP metabolite levels in patients with SLE and investigate the relationship between disease activity, clinical findings, and KP. The study included 100 patients with SLE and 100 healthy controls.

Background: This research extends prior studies by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare on pandemic-related risk perception, concentrating on the role of trust in health authorities and its impact on public health outcomes.

Objective: The paper aims to investigate variations in trust levels over time and across social media platforms, as well as to further explore 12 subcategories of political mistrust. It seeks to understand the dynamics of political trust, including mistrust accumulation, fluctuations over time, and changes in topic relevance.

Background: Tryptophan is an essential amino acid primarily metabolized by the kynurenine pathway in mammals. Intermediate metabolites emerging in this pathway have been associated with many neurogenerative diseases. This study aimed to compare tryptophan pathway metabolite levels in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthy controls and reveal the relationship of tryptophan metabolites with disease subtype and the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score.

Introduction: The aetiology of Kawasaki disease (KD) remains unknown. Changes in infectious exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic owing to infection prevention measures may have affected the incidence of KD, supporting the pathogenic role of an infectious trigger. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, phenotype and outcome of KD before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark.

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a zero-cost substrate for numerous value-added compounds. Although several studies on the production of lipids and carotenoids by Rhodotorula glutinis in OMW exist, none of them has specifically focused on the conditions for a target lipid or carotenoid. This study presents cultivation conditions that selectively stimulate the cell biomass, individual carotenoids and lipids.

In self-determination theory (SDT), multiple conceptual regulations of motivation are posited. These forms of motivation are especially qualitatively viewed by SDT researchers, and there are situations in which combinations of these regulations occur. In this article, instead of the commonly used numerical approach, this is modeled more versatilely by sets and relations.
