Design and early progress of the Comparison of Anticoagulation and anti-Platelet Therapies for Intracranial Vascular Atherostenosis (CAPTIVA) trial.

Background: The usual antithrombotic treatment for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) consists of dual treatment with clopidogrel and aspirin for 90 days followed by aspirin alone but the risk of recurrent stroke remains high up to 12 months. The Comparison of Anticoagulation and anti-Platelet Therapies for Intracranial Vascular Atherostenosis (CAPTIVA) trial was designed to determine whether other combinations of dual antithrombotic therapy are superior to clopidogrel and aspirin.

Methods: CAPTIVA is an ongoing, prospective, double-blinded, three-arm clinical trial at over 100 sites in the United States and Canada that will randomize 1683 high-risk subjects with a symptomatic infarct attributed to 70-99% stenosis of a major intracranial artery to 12 months of treatment with (1) ticagrelor (180 mg loading dose, then 90 mg twice daily), (2) low-dose rivaroxaban (2.

The impact of diet-induced obesity on 5 fluorouracil-induced tumor and liver immune cell cytotoxicity.

Obesity increases the risk for developing several cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC), and is associated with liver perturbations, which likely impacts treatment tolerance. 5 fluorouracil (5FU) remains a first line treatment for CRC, but efficacy is hampered by interpatient variable responsiveness and off-target toxicities. The current study examined the impact of diet-induced obesity (DIO) on 5FU cytopenia and efficacy using two established CRC models: MC38 (C57BL/6) and C26 (CD2F1).

Cachexia, a complex wasting syndrome, significantly affects the quality of life and treatment options for cancer patients. Studies have reported a strong correlation between high platelet count and decreased survival in cachectic individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the immunopathogenesis of cancer cachexia using the Apc mouse model of spontaneous colorectal cancer.

Assessment of Visual Quality Improvement as a Result of Spectacle Personalization.

Personalized spectacles customized according to an individual's facial anatomy were developed to provide enhanced visual performance and overall comfort when compared to standard spectacles. In this comparative crossover trial, each subject was randomly assigned to wear either personalized spectacles or standard spectacles for two weeks and then tried the second pair for another two weeks. Visual acuity and reading speed were measured, and visual quality and comfort were assessed using specific questionnaires.

We proposed to examine the effect that increased skeletal muscle estrogen both in gonadally intact and ovariectomized (OVX) female mice has on preventing or rescuing high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity.

Methods: In the prevention experiment, gonadally intact and OVX SkM-Arom↑ mice and littermate controls were fed a low-fat diet (LFD) or HFD for 13 weeks.

A literature review found numerous interventions effective in reducing nurse burnout through building resiliency and decreasing moral distress. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to improve resiliency and decrease the risk of burnout in HHC nurses through the introduction of a resiliency bundle.
