A portion of ALS cases are caused by mutation of the proteasome shuttle factor (), but the molecular pathway leading from UBQLN2 dysfunction to disease remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that UBQLN2 regulates the domesticated gag-pol retrotransposon 'paternally expressed gene 10 (PEG10)' in human cells and tissues.

Illness perspectives in patients with primary aldosteronism.

Objective: The burden of symptoms and treatment in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA), as well as the patients' experience of the health care is sparsely studied. The objectives of this study were to describe symptoms considered to be the most troublesome by patients with PA, and to explore health related worries and expectations following treatment.

Methods: This was an explorative qualitative study where 25 patients with PA, diagnosed between 2017 and 2019, were included; 13 patients who had undergone adrenalectomy and 12 who were receiving medical treatment.

The importance of personal documentation for patients living with long-term illness symptoms after pituitary surgery: A Constructivist Grounded Theory study.

Introduction: Despite surgical treatment, pituitary adenomas often cause long-term illness symptoms, that profoundly impact patients' quality of life physically, psychologically and socially. Healthcare professionals often fail to recognize and discuss the ensuing problems. Personal documentation, such as symptom monitoring, reflective writing or even posts on social media, may help this patient group to manage their daily life and support communication of their care needs.

Exploring the use of music as an intervention for older people living in nursing homes.

Background: Enjoying cultural events such as musical performances is a human right as well as contributing to quality of life. However, older people who live in nursing homes are often excluded from such events. Music interventions for older people with cognitive decline have been shown to have a positive effect on their mood and behaviour, particularly in terms of anxiety, agitation and irritability.

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is an important shrimp disease of economic importance which causes mass mortality of cultivated penaeid shrimps in Southeast Asian countries, Mexico and South America. This disease was originally caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) which is reported to harbour a transferable plasmid carrying the virulent PirAB-like toxin genes (pirAB). However, little is known about the pathogenicity of VP.

Results of a real-world study on vortioxetine in patients with major depressive disorder in South East Asia (REVIDA).

Objective: The REVIDA study aimed to assess the evolution of major depression symptoms in South East Asian (SEA) patients treated with vortioxetine for major depression in real-world clinical practice.

Methods: This non-interventional study was conducted from August 2016 to April 2017. A total of 138 patients (aged 18-65 years) with an active episode of major depression were recruited from Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Background: Interpersonal problems are thought to play an essential role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether a specific interpersonal profile could be identified in a group of patients diagnosed with Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, or Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified, and to explore if specific types of interpersonal problems were systematically related to treatment outcome in this group of patients.

Methods: The participants were 159 patients who received systemic/narrative outpatient group psychotherapy.

Purpose: To explore patient-reported symptom distress in relation to documentation of symptoms and palliative care designation in hospital inpatients.

Design: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 710 inpatients at two large hospitals in Sweden using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale and the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale. Chart reviews focused on nurses' and physicians' symptom documentation and palliative turning point.

Living with chronic heart failure (CHF) often involves lifelong contact with health care, more or less frequently, depending on fluctuating health-generating disruptions in everyday life. To reduce the influence on continuity in life, health-care professionals should preferably focus on supporting patients in managing their daily lives, based on their perspective. The aim of this study was to describe how the interaction in health-care encounters contributes to either continuity or discontinuity in the daily life for persons with CHF.

The importance of a person-centered approach in diagnostic workups of patients with irritable bowel syndrome: a qualitative study.

The aim of this study was to explore experiences of undergoing a diagnostic workup in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) at a unit for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Research has been sparse in addressing such experiences and the impact on well-being. Patients with IBS were invited to perform a workup of gastrointestinal tests.

Trifluoromethylpyrimidine-based inhibitors of proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (PYK2): structure-activity relationships and strategies for the elimination of reactive metabolite formation.

The synthesis and SAR for a series of diaminopyrimidines as PYK2 inhibitors are described. Using a combination of library and traditional medicinal chemistry techniques, a FAK-selective chemical series was transformed into compounds possessing good PYK2 potency and 10- to 20-fold selectivity against FAK. Subsequent studies found that the majority of the compounds were positive in a reactive metabolite assay, an indicator for potential toxicological liabilities.

Introduction: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a growing problem among young female Singaporeans. We studied the demographics and follow-up data of AN patients referred to dietitians for nutritional intervention.

Methods: A retrospective nutritional notes review was done on 94 patients seen from 1992 to 2004.

CP-673,451 is a potent inhibitor of platelet-derived growth factor beta-receptor (PDGFR-beta) kinase- and PDGF-BB-stimulated autophosphorylation of PDGFR-beta in cells (IC(50) = 1 nmol/L) being more than 450-fold selective for PDGFR-beta versus other angiogenic receptors (e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2, TIE-2, and fibroblast growth factor receptor 2).

A randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of tetracaine gel for pain relief from peripherally inserted central catheters in infants.

Background: Insertion of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) is a commonly performed procedure in both preterm and term infants. Tetracaine 4% gel (Ametop; Smith & Nephew Inc, St. Laurent, Quebec), a topical anesthetic, although reported to be effective for reducing the pain of venipuncture in neonates, has not been investigated for the management of pain associated with the PICC procedure.

Eating disorders in Singapore: a review.

Introduction: Anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge-eating disorder are the three best recognised eating disorders. Eating disorders have been reported to affect some 1 to 3% of adolescent females in the West. Increasing reports from Asia suggest that it is no longer possible to view these illnesses as 'Western' diseases.

Introduction: To describe a young Chinese male with muscle dysmorphia, a recently proposed variant of body dysmorphic disorder.

Clinical Picture: A 24-year-old Chinese male with a morbid fear of weight and muscle loss with associated compulsive weight training, avoidance behaviour, forced eating, depressed mood and disturbed body image.

Treatment: Antidepressants and cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy.

Objective: To study the clinical characteristics of patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

Method: Fifty patients presenting to our department from 1991-1996 were identified and studied retrospectively.

Results: There was an increase in presentations for anorexia and bulimia over the period studied.
