Biopsy specimens taken from the region of the placental bed were examined for the presence of phloxinophilic granulated mononuclear cells in women with a history of recurrent miscarriage and who would eventually miscarry a current pregnancy. They were compared with biopsy specimens from women with intact pregnancies presenting for elective termination of pregnancy and those with "missed abortion." Cells with large cytoplasmic granules (greater than or equal to 1 micron) were abundant in the group of ongoing pregnancies whereas cells with smaller granules (less than 1 micron) that were similar to large granular lymphocytes were more abundant relative to cells with large granules in the biopsy specimens from failing pregnancies.

Silver-binding nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) have been counted in sections of routinely processed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks and have been shown to assist in the distinction between benign and malignant lesions. We have examined 214 benign and malignant breast lesions by this method. The AgNOR counts were fibroadenomas 1.

A significantly greater degree of scintigraphic abnormality was seen in cirrhotics compared with non-cirrhotics using both a visually assessed scan scoring technique (p less than 0.001) and computer-generated spleen-to-liver (S-L) relative activity ratios (p less than 0.

Adjacent cryostat sections from the same tissue block were stained for diagnostic and quantitative histological assessment. The assay was used to illustrate variations in tissue androgen receptor concentration for correlation with epithelial cell content in benign prostate hyperplasia and prostatic cancer, and to show the effects of androgen receptor concentration of resection of prostatic tissue by electroresection.

The inhibitory and stimulatory effects are nonspecific and may be detected using cultured human or murine tumor cell lines. Using such a bioassay, we previously tested fetal cord serum-supplemented culture supernatant and found that an absence of suppression was correlated with an absence of subsequent pregnancy.

Historical evidence consists of documentation of the effects of diseases and modern warfare and more recent behavioral changes traceable to altered economic conditions. Unpredictable and dramatic fluctuations in population characteristics throughout the historic period are revealed, precluding the use of standard population models.

Five of the six pathologists showed a good to excellent intraobserver agreement for assessment of the character of the invasive margin (0.44 less than kappa less than 0.

Often AgNORs are tightly clustered, appearing as one silver-stained nucleolus (AgNu). We have assessed this technique as a possible prognostic indicator for thick (greater than 3.

Random liver samples were assayed by an isoelectric focusing method, with [3H]mibolerone as androgenic radioligand. After 16 wk of oral diethylnitrosamine treatment there was a greater than 20-fold increase in hepatic androgen receptor concentration in female rats (control group 0.

Significant nuclear staining for progesterone receptor was observed in 37 (36%) of the tumours studied and this showed a close correlation with the results of radioligand binding assays for progesterone receptor. In three progesterone receptor positive tumours there was an apparent paradoxical absence of oestrogen receptor; progesterone receptor normally depends on the presence of oestrogen receptor, but these rare tumours may be essentially progesterone receptor positive.

Using monoclonal antibodies to lymphoid cell surface markers we have examined the immunophenotype of the infiltrating lymphoid cells and related this to the tumour ER content. There is a significant inverse correlation between the presence of Leu7-positive cells, which includes a subpopulation of natural killer (NK) cells, and tumour ER content; this is possibly superimposed on the dilutional effect of macrophages and other infiltrating cells.

A copy of the standardised classification (SC) proposed for assessing dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease was circulated to six histopathologists who were asked to apply it to 40 slides from 34 patients with ulcerative colitis to test its reproducibility. The slides were relabelled and recirculated to the pathologists at least one month later. Each was asked to state whether or not key diagnostic features were present before giving a final dysplasia score for the second assessment.

The results were compared with those from basal cell papillomas, with and without clear cell change, and with lesions of psoriasis and lichen planus. The results do not support the contention that these lesions are variants of basal cell papillomas nor that they are true neoplasms.

A 4-centimeter tungsten-carbon multilayer mirror was flown as part of an experimental solar rocket payload, and successful images were taken of the sun at normal incidence at a wavelength of 44 angstroms. Coronal Si-XII emission from an active region was recorded on film; as expected, the structure is very similar to that observed at O-VIII wavelengths by the Solar Maximum Mission flat crystal spectrometer at the same time.
