Anxiety level and clinical course of patients with sickle cell disease during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Objectives: Besides infectious pneumonia and death risks, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted negative psychological impacts on communities, especially on people with chronic diseases. We aimed to evaluate COVID-19 and sickle cell disease (SCD)-related experiences, and the clinical course during the outbreak, to measure anxiety levels of adolescent and young adult patients with homozygous SCD, to analyze the correlations between their COVID-19 experiences and anxiety levels and painful episodes.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 47 patients aged between 14 and 24 years responded to a descriptive instrument and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.

Effectiveness of the caverno-dorsal vein shunt (Barry shunt) on prolonged ischaemic priapism and its effect on the post-operative long-term erectile function.

Ischaemic priapism is the most common form of priapism and requires urgent treatment. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the caverno-dorsal vein shunt on resolution of ischaemic priapism and on the post-operative long-term erectile function in patients presenting with priapism. The study included 10 patients admitted to our hospital for priapism between 2010 and 2018.

Methods: In an ongoing multinational, placebo-controlled, observer-blinded, pivotal efficacy trial, we randomly assigned persons 16 years of age or older in a 1:1 ratio to receive two doses, 21 days apart, of either placebo or the BNT162b2 vaccine candidate (30 μg per dose).

Can we predict who will be more anxious and depressed in the COVID-19 ward?

Objective: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 are at high risk for anxiety and depression, but most studies about mental health during the pandemic included the general public, healthcare workers, and students. Our aim was to determine impairments in physical functions, activity limitations, and participation restrictions with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health version for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) framework in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) receiving treatment. Physical functions were assessed in terms of pain level, fatigue level, handgrip strength, and motor proficiency. Fine motor activities and lower extremity performance were assessed to determine activity limitations.

Central nervous system lesions in Fanconi anemia: Experience from a research center for Fanconi anemia patients.

Background: Brain atrophy, abnormal pituitary morphology, corpus callosum, and posterior fossa abnormalities have been described in patients with Fanconi anemia (FA). We aimed to provide an overview of cranial neuroimaging findings and to evaluate the clinical implications in FA patients.

Procedure: Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of 34 patients with FA were retrospectively evaluated, and patients' clinical data were correlated with the imaging findings.

Out-patient management of patients with COVID-19 on home isolation.

The rapidly increased number of patients with COVID-19 resulted in the shortage of hospital beds. An outpatient follow-up plan was developed for COVID-19 patients with stable clinical condition and no concomitant diseases. For enhanced bone tissue regeneration, it is essential to have printable composite materials with appealing properties such as construct porous, mechanical strength, thermal properties, controlled degradation rates, and the presence of bioactive materials. In this study, polycaprolactone (PCL), gelatin (GEL), bacterial cellulose (BC), and different hydroxyapatite (HA) concentrations were used to fabricate a novel PCL/GEL/BC/HA composite scaffold using 3D printing method for bone tissue engineering applications.

Patient-controlled analgesia and morphine consumption in sickle cell anemia painful crises: A new protocol.

Objectives: The sudden and rapidly increasing severity of pain in sickle cell anemia painful crises frequently requires the use of strong opioids. Patients require continuous administrations of various doses (increased/decreased) within the following hours. This study aims to retrospectively evaluate the effects of a structured protocol based on standardized Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) patient demand count on morphine consumption in painful crises.

Purification and Sorting of Halloysite Nanotubes into Homogeneous, Agglomeration-Free Fractions by Polydopamine Functionalization.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have attracted great attention in the field of nanotechnology as natural, high value-added nanomaterials. Despite their significant potential as carriers of active agents and fillers in nanocomposite structures, inhomogeneity of HNTs in terms of length and diameter along with their agglomeration tendency poses important obstacles for the utilization of them in a wider range of applications. Here, a facile, three-step separation protocol that allows the sorting of HNTs into agglomeration-free, uniform size fractions is reported.

Outcome of noncritical COVID-19 patients with early hospitalization and early antiviral treatment outside the ICU.

Background/aim: Despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for over 5 months, there is yet to be a standard management policy for all patients including those with mild-to-moderate cases. We evaluated the role of early hospitalization in combination with early antiviral therapy with COVID-19 patients in a tertiary care university hospital.

Materials And Methods: This was a prospective, observational, single-center study on probable/confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized in a tertiary care hospital on COVID-19 wards between March 20 and April 30, 2020.
